R100gs/pd custom seat options

Dear all,

R100gs/pd

Ok it's winter & just wanted to consider options on how to make my bike all day comfortable. Don't see myself splashing out anytime soon but welcome peoples opinions or experience.

30,000 miles on the bike and views are:

Single seat-not bad but not that comfortable after a few hours. With 32" inside leg could probably survive a max of an inch higher if I went custom seat. this might give slightly more leg stretch..

Dual seat - have not used for ages but,from memory, less comfortable on than single seat on inside leg & my wife wasn't lean after being treated to a custom seat on my old R1150gs (sold)

Tried a Corbin second hand dual seat & didn't like it at all-appeared even lower than my dual seat.

Seen the Russell seats but just look a bit excessive & wide as I am fairly slim..

Anybody tried better foam in the single or dual seat- opinions/ options? Sargent?

Never tried a leather & suede seat- any opinions?( rain cover issues)

Air hawk-good? Best size for r100gs/pd single seat..

I welcome any input or comfy solutions people have found..

Airhawk medium cruiser with virtually no air in
is very comfortable. 600 miles in a day type of comfortable!

Welsh black sheepskin - not as good as an Airhawk,
but certainly an improvement on standard
single seat. Whole lot cheaper than an Airhawk too.

Have tried a couple of seats..the important thing I reckon is what you cover your buttocks with! Jeans and Y fronts not so good, long johns and 'supportive' trunks - better - leathers with a bit of room and stockings even better! - Yes - I know, I know, jokes about open crotch knickers and smothering your arse with lard aside, I reckon your riding leggings etc are more important that the seat!

I'm on the look out as well, I saw a good looking cover on E bay but it is stitched together. I have memories or rain water oozing out of my old Laverda seat seams so it put me off. What about a Wunderlich seat? Don't know about the stockings but I do use cycling shorts that are padded for a long haul journey. As long as you dont leave the the bathroom breaks too long as they are not quick release.

I bought a new genuine seat to replace my original genuine seat. Sounds daft but the difference in comfort is pronounced. 2,500 miles through Belgium and France in early September with no sign of arse ache at all

I'd tried the Corbin, the sheepskin and the air hawk but didn't get on with any of them.

The airhawk worked a treat with my 1150's but I found, even with a small amount of air in it that on my Pd it ended up lifting and separating my knackers (if you know what I mean) don't half make your nuts ache after a while. It's the front part of the GS seat thats the issue with the airhawk.

Couldn't possibly be your strange wedding tackle Rob ? Thought the idea of "lift and seperate " might be a bonus !!! I have a very cosy relationship with my sheepskin cover. Was reared by some friends of mine in mid Wales- their lamb tastes good too!

I've tried a number of different options and have settled on the Corbin solo seat. I tried a mate's Corbin dual seat and didn't like it at all. The shape of it pushed you too far back. For me it was all wrong. I've also tried the stock seat being recovered. That didn't work out too well either. I have a bit of a thing about getting seats recovered in the UK. It seems that most companies can make a seat look good but pay zero attention to real comfort. I've had loads done over the years and none have been up to the standard of the likes of Corbin or Sargent. I much prefer a firm seat if you are going a reasonable distance in a day. In the US there a number of companies that go into the comfort side of things in some depth, such as Bill and Russ Meyer, James Renazco, Corbin, Sargent etc. but in this country the accent seems to be weather they can stitch poxy flames into the seat. Anyway this is starting to sound like a rant. I think there is a real gap in the market here as getting one from the US is so expensive.

My Corbin solo is lower than stock admittedly but it has to be to make up for the extra width which really helps relieve the pressure points. The position, I find is spot on and is all day comfortable. It is also leather which avoids the old monkey butt feeling. I would say if you were near feel free to try it but I see you're in Jersey so probably not that convenient.

You're welcome. I didn't think Sargent made seats for bikes as early as the Airheads. Renazco Racing in the US have a very good reputation. They do have quite a long waiting list though and they are not cheap, which once you then add import duty and VAT on it starts getting a bit pricey. They do ask for details about weight etc though to get the seat right.

You are right about the Corbin being low though. On the road I don't find it a problem. I took the bike green laning at the weekend and the low seat did make it feel like an awful long way to stand up and sit down all day long. Still it gave the old legs a workout.

I think mines a Wunderluch seat and yes it is comfortable but I've not ridden it far so only ltd experience.

I have a Touratech seat - or Kahedo. It adds a bit of height
One piece rider and pillion. It actually quite firm but surprising comfortable. Pillion seat even better, nicely shaped.

I think the touratech seat also matched up with the HPN tank whereas the standard seat needed cutting.

The old wunderlich dual seats didn't have stitching to sit on as far as I can recall whereas the current one, while looking very nice has stitching running along under your butt- would like to know if that soaks up water and squeezes it back onto your jeans when you sit on it.

Siebenrock sell a "improved remake" of the original foam and cover.

I fitted them to OEM base on my G/S PD , and, like Rob Farmer found them to be much more comfortable than the old gear.

Just a bit more flexibility in the cover and bounce and possibility dual density in the foam seems to make a big difference.
