R1100gs 94 running rich

I actually have the Haynes manual but find the info a bit condensed sometimes.

I've worked out how to make the adjustment so should be fine from here in.

I did make a manometer the other day and balanced the TBs as described on another thread. It worked brilliantly. Just an 1/8th of a turn on one side was all that it needed to really smooth things out.

Thanks for the tip on removing the slack. I'll check it out.

You've made a manometer and balanced the throttles ????? How did you manage that if you've never adjusted the slack in the cables. ???.

Adjusting the cable slack is how you balance the throttles ?.

I balanced it at idle and I turned one of the big brass screws and 8th of a turn.

How does turning the idle screw smooth the bike out, it makes no difference the moment the throttle is opened by one mm.

Adjusting the cables smoothes the bike out.

Cheers. Will finish the job then now I that I understand the process.

Any more thoughts as to why the bike refuses to start with a biege CCP installed?

Will it start with the throttle held open or on the fast idle? It may have been adjusted on the CO pot for running without. You have two threads open and trying to sort out two problems at once is a dogs arse of a job.

Best get a bit of paper and write down all the things you have done in order, so you can have a think where the fixes have come from and are going. Done individually the adjustments are all simple enough but all together they can cause probs...

PS Try to find a garage with a CO meter...

Good advise. It's Saturday down under tomorrow so I'll try these things out tomorrow.

Cheers

Hi Guys

I've done a search on this but can't find the info I'm after.

The bike has no cat and has a CO2 pot. Just had it serviced an it was running fine.

On start up it puts out a fair bit of dark smoke that strongly of smells of gas. my mileage isn't so great either. the bike has 60k miles o it and i ride fairly conservatively.

Any ideas on how to approach this?

I am thinking also a good and alternative approach of how to do it. I think I should consult an expert for it. :D :thumb

SUCCESS!!

I finally got the beige ccp setting to take. The bike runs much better now, especially above 4k rpm. The bike pulls like a raging bull all the way through it's rev range. What a startling improvement from a simple fix.

Just now need to get the CO2 set properly at a garage.

Thanks for your help guys!:thumb2:thumb2

The "seat o yer arse" is usually a good indicator on these old tractors:D Worth a check on the CO but until then just look for a sootly exhaust again as I expect you saw that before with it running rich. Nice one:thumb

Thanks

I've now rediscovered the joys of second gear. The bike revs so cleanly now that I'm becoming a bit of a hooligan.. :augie
