Can anyone assist with some buying advice for an 1100GS other than the usual checks on service history and all that stuff corrosion etc. I have spotted a 1997 model with ABS and a genuine ??? 19403 miles, dealer sale at circa £3100. Ideally I would have liked an 1150 / 1200 but budget is restricted. So is it a good starter for 10 or forget it and save some more money? There is no luggage system on it. My short stature (Circa 30" inside leg) may also be an issue. Any assistance greatly appreciated

Going for an 1100 is not going for an inferior product......quite the opposite in fact. From a dealer I would say that is a decent price if it comes with a meaningful warranty. If the mileage is genuine the usual `biggies` to check (clutch and gearbox) should not come into it unless it has spent all its time around town. BMW system panniers can be picked up for around £200. If it has been garaged I would expect very little corrosion indeed. Mine has done 105K, is used in all weathers and still scrubs up pretty well. Go for it, you won`t lose a lot on it, if any, if you don`t like it (which you will!)

This will be it then

It has the best screen (MRA). The wheels have been powder coated as they would have been bare aluminium rims originally. This is no bad thing in my book as they can corrode and discolour.
It looks like it may not have heated grips which is a shame, but no biggie
Looks good enough to me as long as that mileage can be proved.

That looks to be in fairly good raft that for a bike of it's year. Mines a V reg and don't look half as good as that. Plus one on the mileage thing.... they are a great bike....:thumby:

I paid £3000 for my 97 Abs/Heated grip equiped 1100gs recently from a dealer. Mines also really clean and has been well maintained.
They are not the quickest of bikes but give it time and it will grow on you big time. I've owned mine for nearly 2 months and just after I picked her up spent 1 wk riding around northern France. Its a do everything bike and its well built.

little tip....that bike can be bought for £2900 If you barter with him.i know this because I almost bought it 2 wks ago and that's what he dropped down to:thumb2.i,m in the same boat has you with the same sort of budget.looking for a low mileage bike.i,ve seen 1150,s going for about the same price, just trying to work out the pro,s and con,s of both bikes.best of luck.

As bart2181 alludes to - you can get a decent 1150GS for that price in the current market. They pop up on here very regularly if you subscribe to get access to the 'For Sale' forums.

I like the look of that. I spent £3200 on a 97 1100 with similar mileage two years ago from a member if this site. Still have the bike and love it. I challenge you to find an 1150 in the same condition and mileage....they are a great bike just not the same build quality as the 1100.

Clearly if you could see the for sale section , you would be on a flight to Belfast by now .. and riding home on my 1100 ..... with luggage ... with top box ... with heated grips ... etc , and have saved lots of money (and got a bike a year newer )

(Can't quite compete with the miles though !!) :beerjug:

Cheers guys for all the advice. I'll let you know how I get on and I'll look forward to a good barter if it lives up to the advert.
