Hi Everyone. I am hoping someone can give me some guidance with the following problem on my R1100GS, on a '99 plate and has done 22,000 miles.

This problem occured after a few weeks of not being started (never been a problem in the past)

The bike started from cold then runs for 5 seconds and dies. It refuses to re-start. A week later the same thing happens. The plugs then show no sign of a spark.

The following test was performed:

  1. Engage top gear and switch ignition on - Pump whines and stops.
  2. Turn rear wheel with ignition on - Pump whines, injectors click, 5 seconds later all goes quiet but the wheel is still being turned.
  3. Tank off - the wiring is clean and tidy, especially the HES joint.
Is this conclusive proof that the HES is kaput? or are we looking in the wrong place?

An intriguing aspect of all this is that there are two HE sensors at the end of the crank shaft. Since the crank will be in the same position when each plug fires then why have two sensors at 180 deg apart? this would suggest a spark at the bottom of the stroke.

Clearly there is a good reason for there being two sensors and it would be useful to know how that works, and more importantly, how it fails?

I am being helped by a friend with this who is far more knowledgeable than I. So please bear with me if you ask a question that I don't know the answer to. I will reply.

Many thanks

Steptoe is the man to guide you:bow

But until then, I reckon it could be the Hall Sensor or maybe the short wiring loom from the front of the tank to the ignition barrel. Try turning on the ignition and jiggling the wiring or move the bars from side to side. Does the ignition cut in and out?

Bet it's the Hall Sensor though:thumb

I believe there was a thread recently which said that one sensor does the sparks and the other is for the fueling.

I stand to be corrected.

The 1100 gs can be blink code read with an analog multi meter the how to is on advrider saves all the pissing about (hall sensor is behind the v belt pully on the crank)

Hi Shready. Just to clarify. We unplugged the conncector for the HES which is under the tank, the one with the plastic shroud around it, to check for any corrosion, or muck, but it was clean. You are right of course, the HES is behind the black plastic cover at the front of the engine, behind the pulley.
