So drained gearbox oil yesterday and found chunks of metal stuck to the magnet looks like bearing cage has started to break up..anyone fix it ?and roughly how much is it gonna cost ? Or get a reconditioned one from Motorworks ...seriously pissed off :(:tears

Take it to MikeyBoy if you want the job done properly

I think it’ll cost £500 or more, maybe

It is not great but at least it is fixable

If you contact the other Paul G on here he may have a box he could send to Mileyboy to get reconditioned

So you do a one out/ one in in a day instead of weeks waiting ?

Think of the positive side of things Even you spend £500 ~ £750 what could you buy that would replace that bike ??

AND you have just maintained it for another 75K miles

If you taking box out yourself then fix it your self, split it and have look, if bearing on way just replace all bearings and seals, I done 2 boxes on 1150 and 1100 and still on the road, on 1100 done 35k ml so far no issue. Worth save money, hardest part taking box out. But that just me.

I've no room in my lockup or power for lights etc..plus if I take it to someone who has removed the gearbox /clutch before they will be quicker as they'll only remove what needs to be ..

This was what I did when my R80GS munched an output shaft bearing - they were known to do this.

I picked up a s/h gearbox, swapped them with assistance from Lancs Police VMU for the special tool needed, then split and rebuilt the old one to keep as a spare. When I changed to the 1150GS, a gearbox came up on eBay and I got it for £52, checked it over, filled it with oil and boxed it up in the garage. A bit like the pound of butter in the fridge, I’ve still got it boxed up after 20yrs untouched… But you never know.
