I have owed a R1100GS for over 10 years. To date apart from service parts the bike has been spot on.

However recently I have noticed when filtering in traffic around or below 30mph and under 2000 rpm I get a horrible miss!

To describe this miss further, Imagine you are filtering along and suddenly for a brief spit second you completely shut off the throttle off, problem is I'm not shutting it off, the miss just happens randomly!

It mainly seems to happen once the engine is warm, and then only happens at around 30mph and under 2000 rpm, the gears are irrelevant whether you are in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

There is absolutely no problem throughout the rest of the rev range, its spot on accelerating, decelerating etc... its just happens when filtering.

Would appreciate anyone with any expert info on this rare fault to post here. Thanks

Hi,welcome t'site.A favourite for older oilheads are the Hall Effect sensors.
I believe Chandlers of Brighton are a decent enough dealer who could run their diagnostics to check sensors etc.

I see a few 1100 models with this problem. In fact i fixed/cured a ukgser's 1100 with the exact same problem only two weeks ago.

Here's his PM (as i don't encourage "thank you" type spam in the forums)

Hi...the r1100gs you seviced for me last monday runs fine.....like a diffrent bike through the traffic.
Many thanks .... Peter

At least "kickstheiron" can make a trip to Steptoes! Some of us are a bit more geographically challenged to pop in:D

Perhaps you should do a guide and charge for it? :augie Mind it wouldn't have the "healing hands" of the man himself :D

1100's

There you are from the expert himself, get it down to Steptoes with your machine and all your probs are over.

Some things are more than the sum of their parts. It's not as straightforward as just "one thing" needs doing and that's it.

Yip, agreed as I have been through a few. It was suggested with a smile anyhow:D

All these engines seem to have their own individual character especially the 11's.

Hiya ..... yep the man steptoe cured the prob ..... the bike would just miss a beat or cut right out between 2000...3000 rpm when filtering through traffic. It was a real pain and i was on the verg of dumping it.......but like i said it runs sweet now ........ pete

This is probably nothing related to the problem you described but I thought I'd share it anyway.
The bike (1100 - 53k) started to miss occasionally on tickover accompanied by a loud click on the RHS. Took the plug cover off and saw an intermitant spark from the HT lead to the head (just before the plug cap). Changed the lead (£50 fer christsakes) and all now OK.

:reaper: thanks for your responses, gonna try putting a mates motronic unit on

Sounds a bit drastic  if its the dreaded surge then it seems to tune out after a coat of looking at rather than any replacements, mine turned out to be a dry joint on the ignition switch wiring, valve clearances and TB balancing rank high too, the moronic itself seems stone reliable.

r1100 misses

:reaper yea, swopping motronic didnt sort it but we did establish that the left hand pot had a miss so gonna try new leads and then new coils, new as in second hand from M/Ws

R1100GS MISSES

swapping leads & coils made no difference !this all came about after a new hall senser was fitted, timing checked, fuel injection checked, bike starts & ticks over fine, runs fine under acceleration, top end perfect, small throttle opening below thirty & under 2000 revs and a miss can be felt on left cylinder/!?
