Not sure if this has been covered but cant find it if it has, should my bike have an oxygen sensor?
I bought a 97 1100GS with Cat removed, aftermarket can and K&N but no oxygen sensor, the bold is there that can be removed to accomodate one but its just not there. Its doesnt run too bad but im concerned it may be running rich and using too much fuel, should I go to the expense of fitting one as over time the extra fuel cost im currently possably having will pay for it.
Any ideas? Does everyone else have one fitted with this setup?

Where was the bike from? where was it first registered. Ireland or Europe.. or even America?

If the answer is no no and no. then it never had a CAT. And will have a CO potentiometer instead.

UK 1100's never had a CAT.

Yip, check for the CO pot as previously mentioned. Fuel consumption is approx 10/11 miles per litre or 45-50 per gallon. The Co pot only adjusts the tickover end of the revs for richness and after that it is the TPS/engine temp sensor/air temp sensor in "open loop" mode. Unless you have a sooty exhaust outlet then it is probably running leaner at the higher revs but BM's are set to run lean anyway.

the co pot is located under the offside rear wheel mudguard, near the rear footpeg hanger, access thru a little icky bicky hole, adjusted byturning screw..only adjusts richness at t/o as stated....no cat ever fitted, thankfully!

Just bear in mind it was set up when the bike was first made.. and normally never gets touched again. you would only do so with a Carbon Monoxide sensor in the exhaust.. not a piece of equipment found in the average toolbox.

If in doubt.. don't touch it. take it to a dealership or a garage with the proper equipment.

you should be getting around 190 - 200 miles +/- to the warning light coming on and staying on. If thats the case then the bike is just fine.

OK Thanks for all the advice, it need filling up so will fill her and reset trip counter to see what im getting out of her.

Ill have a look for that potentiometer thingy when i get a mo.:thumb

Apologies in advance, but I have a few dumb questions.

1. Do the O2 sensor (CAT bikes) and CO2 potentiometer (non CAT bike) live in, sort of, the same place? i.e. sticking out of the exhaust or cat with wires coming out of them?

2. How can you tell the difference between the two? Visually different? Differing number of wires? or what?

The reason I ask is that I have a '95 1100GS that I think was a US import and originally had a cat. It now wears a Remus Revolution and there's a big metal doodah sticking out of system which is one or the other. So...

3. Assuming it a O2 sensor originally for the cat sysytem, is there an advantage in swapping it for a CO2 potentiometer? Is it a straight swap?

Oh yeah,

4. Can I just run my previously-cat-but-now-non-cat bike without either an O2 sensor or CO2 potentiometer? What effect does it have on running, fuel consumption, etc.?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Either look up thruogh the hole for a brass flat blade screw head in a plastic insert or remove the rear seat and tool tray for a better look. It is a small plastic box connected to a frame lug and attached to the loom. It may have been moved by a PO.

Anyone got a pic of position of CO pot? I found a hole but no idea what, if anything, is up there!

Hi Chrizm, have a look here. There are some useful pictures/info about half way down the first page of the thread. At least I know what I'm looking for now
