So the starter on my 1999 45K mile R1100GS was turning over a bit slowly and I wasn't sure if it was the battery or the starter. So I decided to take a look at the starter given they are a known problem. Having got it off and in bits it seems to be in pretty good shape, maybe the brushes are a bit worn down and it's lacking some grease here and there, however...
When taking it off the nut holding the main starter cable on the solenoid was pretty hard to turn and, long story short, the stud on the solenoid started to turn and distort and I ended up having to cut the nut off with a dremel and the threads are also damaged. See pic. I thought these nuts were normally copper? Mine was steel.
I don't suppose anyone has an old starter (its a Valeo D6RA75) that might have had a failed armature or other fault but the solenoid is OK? I'd be happy to pay for it and postage of course. Will also post this the in wanted section. Thanks

A few options for you here

a new starter from China approx $50 ( USD)

EME sells the complete solenoid unit for $40

or it might be this one

Many Saturn and I THINK citroen cars use that same starter, so perhaps a local salvage yard might have the parts.

Or ... use a new nut and bolt, and a nylon or fiberglass washer/bushing inside the metal case to insulate the new bolt from case.

cheapest option.

I likely have that part also, but shipping would kill any deal probably ( I am in the USA)

I think I've got an old one lurking somewhere in the garage, which you can have for nothing. I'll dig it out in a bit and let you know what it's like. I'm well to the South of London, but from next week am in London during office hours if that helps get it to you.

Yup, found my old one, it is also a Valeo D6RA75. You're welcome to it if it's any use.

Thanks for that helpful input. A couple of people have offered used ones to me over here

Thanks Jon, very kind. Another member is sending me one this week which I hope will have a good solenoid. If not, where would you be in London? Would you be willing to post it if I paid postage?
Cheers, Nick

Hi Nick, I'm in Victoria. Happy to travel locally in central London to meet up, or to post.
