Hi
Can anyone please shed a little light on a problem that my bike has just developed :

I turn it on and all is normal, hit the start button and get one click and all the lights go out, turn off and back on all lights off, bounce up and down a couple of times and the lights come back on.

It is obviously a short somewhere but can someone please point me in the right area to start looking

thanks in advance

Check yer 'load shedding relay' is seated properly in its socket.

This relay is what drops out the lights, etc, while starting the engine.

It may simply be fecked.

If,like most folk here, you`re unable to consult a workshop manual for your machine in order to identify the relay, just check all relays and connectors for security and cleanliness of connectors.

check

the wires at the base of the ignition switch, they are renowned for failing after time. Can be resoldered but a new ignition loom is best if this is the cause. Do a search on 'ignition loom' and settle in for an evenings reading

or maybe not.

If the wires are worn at the bottom of the ignition barrel. Switch the ignition on and jiggle them about. They'd be fiddly to solder in situ, so take it to a dealer, they can replace the bottom section, costs about £50 IIRC.

Actually, call them first so they can order the part :thumb2

These are the exact same symptoms that had me stumped a while back. It turned out that it was the battery connections. Undid, cleaned, tightened firmly, job done.

Worth double-checking yours I reckon.

Pluck

Good one.

The wiring usually curves round to the left and goes to a connector near the headstock under the tank.

A lot of older bikes have suffered from broken wires in this section of wiring, due to it being tie wrapped to the front subframe, and the fault can easily be repaired.

Bear in mind that the actual contacts may possibly be fecked,so you may possibly need a new contact block.

The switch contact block is removeable from the ignition barrel without major work...or stripping anything else off...but there`s a trick to it which shouldn`t really be posted on these pages for every scrote to see,but I (or others) can tell you via PM if necessary.

EDIT.. I`ve just noticed you`re not a Site Sponsor so you can`t PM but you appear to be local to me if you want a meet up ?
