I have an odd problem with my R1100GS.
Tried to start it this morning and it starts no problem at all it will then run for a few seconds and then dies, revving it makes it die quicker, so I am making an assumption that its a fuel problem.

It was running fine last night and the bike was left out and it rained, dont know if thats an issue. When I switch the ignition on you can hear the fuel pump start up.

Havent had a chance to have a good look yet but wondered if the fuel pump starts up and sends a small amount of fuel down the line and thats what allows the bike to start but then no more is being sent, trouble is that I don't have to switch ignition off and on again, simply hit the starter button and it starts, so I am not sure how that could be the case ??
The battery is fine, the petrol is low because I ran it down to get the plate of the inside of the tank, but there should be sufficient fuel in the tank, and I had a liter spare in a fuel can and put that in as well.

I did have the tank off yesterday and replaced hose clips on the overflow/vent pipes but I started it up after I had finished and it ran fine. So I am inclined to think it is an electrical fault rather than a mechanical one but I am stumped for idea's so anything anyone can suggest will be gratefully received and investigated.

The bike is standard R1100GS with standard fuel injection fitted, no aftermarket controllers etc, standard fuel pump and filter, I do have two QD hose connectors on the fuel lines, and it has an aftermarket Remus exhaust system, no exhaust sensor either on the original system or replacement.

If it's not the cables, I'd have to suspect something else to do with your tank removal - too much of a coincidence.

You did connect your QD hose connectors to the correct hoses did you?

No hoses pinched under the tank?

Judge, a good call, but Bowser said that it ran fine after putting the tank back on. :augie

Bowser how long did you run the bike for? If it was a quick test to make sure all is well then I would say fuel starvation. have you traped the vent pipe? open the filler and see if it runs better. If it was OK on a 20 mile run then it could be last nights rain getting in where it shouldnt.

I don't care I got in first and if I hadn't someone else would have done, it wasn't getting it right that is important on this one, its getting in first :D

Plus I don't believe him when he says is was running right after it went on :augie

Thanks for all the replies.
yes I am well aware of the seating problem with the throttle cables and not thats not the problem, I fell foul of that one the first week I had the bike and I havent done that since !! I may be a fool somtimes but I am not that much of a fool.

It could be HT but I don't see how? if it were coils surely it would be difficult to start and would run but run badly or on one cylinder, this dosent affect it like that, each and every time you hit the starter button the bike will start fine, it will only run for a few seconds and then dies, whilst it is running it sounds fine exactly as normal and then just dies,

I will check the vents etc.

Re running it, I started it up in the Garden and it ran for a couple of minutes, gave it a bit of a rev to make sure everything appeared ok, it started up, revved ok and then sat there on tick over for a bit. I will agree that is not really a proper test however its also not starting up and stopping straight away, it

I'm definitely going for pinched hose (or rmiss-connected QD's).

Bike runs on the fuel in the lines, then starves (or until a pinched breather produces a vacuum). Course I may be talking complete bollox :D but I think the 'tank removal followed by running problems' is too great a coincidence to ignore - Occam's Razor.

I think your right somewhere along the line, however re the qd connectors again I am not a complete fool, one has a male the other a female to make sure that I didn't get that particular problem.

Not suggesting for a moment that you're a fool. My question arose from reading that some people have installed QD connectors without 'handing' them, leading to the possibility of miss-connecting them.

go through what you did and check everything, including the QD connections, plus looking for a pulled electrical plug or trapped hose.

Right then I have had the tank off again, connected the fuel pump up to a battery and I am getting fuel out nice pressure, so fuel supply dont appear to be the problem.
I have checked all the connectors and they seem ok.

A recent thread ...

... with a similar problem turned out to be the electrical connector block turned through 180 degrees, apparently it'll fit together; check the wiring colours :nenau

FROM NIC 1084

I would suggest that you check if you have fitted the earth to the injector housing.... only a COMPLETE fool would fit it to something else in error!!! .... lol
