Hi Guys

I have been lurking here for some time - I sold my R1100S a few months ago due to not getting on with the riding posistion, I had intended to buy a 1150GS - due to the usual 'unforseen' expenses ( vets bills!) I can't realy afford a 1150 - so have decided that a 1100 GS could be the answer.

I have seen a '98 1100GS on ebay with 60K on the clock , looks clean ( self servcied , long journeys etc).

Any one out there with a high milage GS who can give any advice? ( I am not to worried about trying to resell) - my cars got 90K plus and thats ok - do you recon an oil head boxer will be ok with this milage? - price is in the £2-3000 range.

Many thanks for any advice

No Problem

Mileage isn't the issue on these babies, Vern has 100 plus K on his so I guess that solves that.

Actual history is better......import or not, has it been chucked down the street? HPI is your friend remember.

It sounds just like mine. If it is, then buy it you'll have a great bike.

If you get a good vibe off the owner and he's got the gear [vacuum gauges] to service it, cosmetically it's good [if he's spent time taking care of the outside hopefully the internals are looked after as well] then buy it.

If it's any use to you here what's gone wrong with mine, may be you could look for the same on this one.

Oil pressure switch. Easy replace
Seat locking mechanism. 60 quid to replace.
Headlight bulb.
Speedo Cable.

Bevel box pivot bearings. 24 quid/pr. Grab the rear wheel at 3 and 6 o'clock, if you can feel any movement then replace, you may also be able to see the rubber gator move. Lots of how to instructions on this site and ADVrider.

Bevel box oil seal. 25 quid plus postage to Sherlocks. Free the large side of the rubber gater and see if any oil escapes. If it does it's either from the bevel box or gear box. You'll need to ascertained were it coming from. Try shining a torch up the swingarm bore and inserting a finger.
Could be the bearings and seal could both require replacement. if you think it's the gearbox the repair will require the removal off the box.

Brake discs are due to be replaced next year.

With regard to this particular bike. I'd be more worried about it being an import rather than the milage. Check it's history out. Good that it's off the road in winter. Check out the shocks if you can.
