The tachometer bouncing erratically is a good indicator.

Plus after it cools down it works again until heated up.

Sounds like yours is breaking down with heat, which is common failure. Could be the hall sensor wiring loom. Depending on how electrically minded your are, it might be worth removing the sheathing from the loom and examine the individual wiring for shorts and breaks, and or bad joints where the sensors themselves are connected into the loom.

If you find nothing obvious then it's most likely the sensor itself breaking down with heat.

This link, has all the info you might need.

I have the one that came of my 1100GS which turned out not to be the problem on my bike. Yours for £40 posted :) ?

mark shelley cheers mate i will be in touch tomorrow,i will take the old one off first in order to see what multi plug is on the end as i have seen there is two different types, one oblong with wires on top of each other and one with the wires in a row one after another
cheers ian

you were very correct my friend, the wiring is damaged as it goes into the multi plug,a friend who is an electrical engineer is going to have a go at a repair
