Sitting here eating my dinner, before I go and get the book out can anyone tell me when should I check the engine oil. When its hot or cold? (I was told cold by the dealer to check it when its cold and the oil glass should be full) Is this correct?

nope once again i believe the dealer is wrong. Check when hot after a good run. Leave it standing for about 5 to 10 mins then check should be about half way up the sight glass no higher really.
Am I wrong?

The manual says hot. I check after a good run, on centre stand, level floor, give oil 10 mins to settle.
There is a slight discrepancy, as the BMW service manuals say fill the bikes up to the top of the window when cold, when changing the oil.

Mine is showing half full and it is cold so does that mean when the oil expands when its hot it would show full,what is the best level to keep it at when cold?

But even if the oil has expanded, it will be distributed around the engine and not in the sump................so how do you think you sould compensate for that?????
Or perhaps you should just check it as per manual.
That's my engine fekked then....., and i wouldn't pour cold oil into a hot engine

Quite right too, your dealer should be able to supply you with correct tools, so give them a call in the morning and ask them to put a lube heater aside for you.

Yes it does, along with (rather like the Sun's crossword puzzle) little pictures and full a explanation as to the sight glass's min. max. level, the quantity of oil between min. and max and the correct method of checking it.
Just read your owner's manual.... After all, it's why BuMW publish it and give it away with their vehicles, is it not?
Here it is, word for word from the manual, unfortunately I cannot reproduce the very clear pictures.

Checking engine oil level
The oil level varies with the temperature of the oil. The higher the temperature, the higher the level of oil in the sump.
Checking the oil level with the engine cold or after no more than
a short ride will lead to misinterpretation; this in turn, means that
the engine will be operated with the incorrect quantity of oil.
In order to ensure that the engine oil level is read correctly,
check the oil level only after a lengthy trip.
Switch off the engine when it is at operating temperature.
Make sure the ground is level and firm and place the motorcycle
on its centre stand. Wait five minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan.
Check the oil level in oil-level indicator.
Engine oil, specified level
Between MIN and MAX marks.
If the oil level is below the MIN mark:
Top up the engine oil.
If the oil level is above the MAX mark:
Have the oil level corrected by a specialist workshop, preferably an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer.
Maybe you should refer your dealer to your handbook, so they too will know in the future?

What do you mean by cold? Do you keep your oil in a fridge freezer, perhaps?
There is no mention in the handbook of the perils of putting 'cold' oil into a hot engine. Indeed, by implication it's exactly the reverse. Heat up engine and its oil. Leave for five minutes on level ground, on center stand. If the (still hot) oil level is low, top up.... one can only assume with oil from a can that you can hold in your hand without asbestos gloves.... you will probably notice when you remove the filler cap that the oil is hot enough to smoke slightly.... pour in regular day-to-day temperature oil... it won't crack like a hot plate in the sink.

Only thing to add regarding the lengthy trip, just make sure oil is at the running temp (ride until the oil temp gauge is at the normal running level)
1. Ride bike til oil temp is at normal running level, look at the gauge.
2. Gan Hyem stop bike and take key oot.
3. Hoyk bike on the centrestand
4. Gan and mayk yersen a cuppa
5. Then gan back oot, have looksee at the oil level.
6. If its alreet, gan in the hoose and say hello to the wifey and bairns
7. If its paggard like, gettin low, towards tha bottom of the lower circley thing, hoy some more in til its near the top of the upper circly thing.

Now where do I afix that pesky tax disc again - maybe somewhere which will make it easier to get my Adventure on its centre stand??

OK I GIVE UP THANKS FOR ALL YOUR WHIT AND HELP, what made me ask the question was when i picked my bike up from the dealers i was told when the glass is full when cold all the oil has run down from the oil cooler and pipes,but when i read the manual it said said the opposite but its all become very clear now thanks again.
