At 15500 miles there should be little wear due to usage. I am assuming you mean 2008 and not the futuristic 2058 model with time travel option? Is so, the it has spent a lot of time stationary. A seized sliding joint mght be more likely.
I think the gearbox input shaft is a weak point on these models. I stripped my gearbox to teplace the bearings. The bike had 148,000 miles on it and I was doing the engine bearings, pistons etc. During the strip down I found the input shaft shock absorber casing was split. A new one was not available because BMW had redesigned but not yet released the new part. I bought 3 2nd hand ones, all were coming apart in the same way. The symptom of this failing is a good solid "clunk" on every gear change, yet no excessive back lash when tested by hand.
Again, at 15500 that seems unlikely but something to bear in mind at least.
Check your sliding spline joints first though. Beware, if they are worn excessively the splines can become sharp - DAMHIK
