Wanted R1200GS 2009 - alternator wanted.

A friend is looking for a replacement for the alternator on his bike. It started whining on his holiday in France. On return and stripping it out, the casing is cracked and the whole unit is u/s. He's tried the usual sources (Sherlock, MW) with no joy.

It's a Denso 60 amp unit and part number 12317712825

Rare as hens teeth, probably a Bosch conversion would be cheaper and better quality. There’s a thread on ‘how to’ on here somewhere.

I think he’s gonna struggle

Seemingly an Achilles heel on R1200 (04-13) and BMW hold the reins

My mechanic told me it’s a stupid design over 1100/1150’s as it’s non adjustable and the belt puts extra pressure on the pulleys and fragile casings (add in salt corrosion too) and the casing cracks, so the belt then slips and bingo no charging and it’s US, because of the cracked casing

So a component thats lasted 17 years , has finally failed

and there not happy with the cost to replace,

Id say thats a win, it cost me over a grand for 1 shock absorber and that was only 5 years old

It’s corrosion that normally kills them, as in this case. Mine was in excellent condition, but just gave up charging around 72,000 miles which is poor compared to my last car, a VW Golf with 150,000 miles.
