Took delivery of my 2004 R12GS with 7000km on clock. Absolutely loved her for 5 days and then started having cold start problems! Starts, runs for about 3 sec then dies. After about 6 attempts eventually starts and then runs 100%. Took to BMW agent. Apperently main ECU needs replacing!So now I have to wait 2 weeks for ECU to arrive from Germany.Going to make that 1st Instalment ( with no bike ) very painful. Am I just unlucky or is this the sign of things to come ??Anyone with similar problems. ( fortunately still covered by BMW Warranty at this stage)
This sounds very similar to the problems encountered starting the bike on the centre stand with the side stand down, when the engine starts, the drag on the engine components make the rear wheel spin, the engine management senses the wheel moving and the side stand down, so shuts the engine down for safety
Very common when cold, then as the oil warms up there is less or no drag to spin the rear wheel
Thanks for info Shep. I assume you mean that this would happen when the bike is in neutral? If that was the real problem then it will make me and the agent look rather silly. Hoping to get bike back within next 2 days and will be keen to test that theory.
