R1200GS seat will not release!

Hi,
The seat will not release on my 1200GSA - is there a quick fix?

The best bet is to thump hard on the back of the seat as you keep the key turned. In case you are new to the GS Be aware it turns in the opposite direction to that when releasing the rear seat!

I had the same problem on my 2005 Gs 1200 - I could not understand why it was stuck - until i found the wire from my auto comm system had become trapped behind the catch mechanism which would not allow it to fully open.
With a little fiddling with the wire it freed itself and now since moving the wire its fine.

Press down on the seat, turn key, release seat, up it pops.

Like others have said - press down on the back of the seat as you turn the key anticlockwise. I also seem to remember some posts in the past where if the height adjustment bars are set differently between front and back, this can cause the seat to stick.

Hi Guys,
BIG thanks for all these quick replies - yes several hard thumps eventually did the trick.
Just changed my 05 1200gs for this GSA today, never had a problem taking the seat off before.
Such is life with these GS's!!!

Chaps, with my 08 gsa - always have to remove pillion seat before rider seat - is there a fix for this. Have changed from a vfr with a key operated helmet lock and it seems like a bit of a dog having to remove 2 seats to lock my lid to the bike!!!!!

Get a cable lock and just lock the lid to the grab handles.

Guys this is a common problem for the 1200. a fix for this is to fix on a length of wire to the release hooks, this allows the release mechanism to be pulled fully which does not happen with the key aalone. Its described here somewhere..do a seach.

The wire solution means you have to leave the pillion seat fitted otherwise anyone can remove your seat without a key.

There is another solution involving slightly bending the lever the pulls the seat hooks so that it pulls them slightly further. - Admittedly the wire solution does not damage the bike - whereas getting the bending option wrong does.

So it's not just me with this problem
I have tried all sorts and made a cam mech to try to improve it but to no avail
Resort to banging seat as said but does not look to good in front of a crowd wishing they had a bike like yours..
Will try the wire route never thought of that
Any one any idea what thread it was on please..
Also have problem locking seat in position

Seat not releasing

Hi Guys,
I have also now as a back up used the wire release method.
Some single strand picture framing wire and a small section of aquarium airline tubing slipped over as a handle --- it works pefectly everytime.
Well worth installing.

My seat on my '02 1200 gs does the same, the release hooks don't clear the bar on the seat. On mine the pin that falls to push the bar for the hooks moves a good distance before contacting the plate it pushes. I cut some alli from a can in a strip then wound it round the pin, held it with a zip tie to act like a sleve. Contact is made sooner and the hooks push back further. A big fat zip tie on it's own would help.
Does anyone else have a gap between the pin and the plate ??
