r1200gs speed wobble

I have just brought a 05 gs with 10k miles on the clock,its fitted with new tyres but at any thing over 65/70 mph it starts a bit of wobble from the front its worse if there is turbulent air from other vehicles.
suspension set up as standard factory settings..

What exactly is the front tyre, EG Sports rubber, enduro knobbly, touring ??

Are the tyre pressures correct, tyres new but are the tyres worn, is the tread depth OK?

Any play in the suspension or steering evident?

How many miles have you done to get used to it vs. what you had before? If it's you first GS / big trailie you may just need a few more miles to get used to the lower steering effort afforded by the wide bars. The effect of the wind hitting your upper body at speed, especially when riding in the "dirty" air following a van or lorry can cause a slightly unstable feel. Nothing to worry about, just stay loose.

The effect is somewhat more noticeable sat bolt upright at 130....

Check that the tyres are the correct sizes and pressures, and fitted the right way round.Have you an aftermarket screen or luggage of any sort on the bike? The GS is sensitive to turbulent air, very much so if you'r as tall as me, particularly if there's a truck ahead of you. The GS handlebars give lots of leverage so it's very easy to steer, which could feel like a wobble if you're used to sports bikes.

Is the rear a Dunlop ?

Could it be the effect of turbulence/wind on yourself and therefore your input to the bars?

the front tyre is dunlop trailmax,rear metzeler tourance,both new,I have checked for movement in the front forks and ball joint all seam tight,

And that may be your problem*. Some tyres just don't mix. Did you buy it with the mix or has the wobble started since a tyre change?








* - someone'll be along in a mo to say mixing tyres is ok.

Check out all the safety features as noted above, then relax...

I had exactly the same symptoms. At 6'+ and an upright rider with a bigger screen than standard, buffeting was a problem. Tobinators helped significantly, but really I had to take the time to adjust the way I rode the bike: loosen the grip on the bars, let the bike do the steering, lower the unconscious steering inputs and just take the time to get in front and enjoy the clean air...

Think i'd be having a trip back to the stealers then, and get them to sort it out.
