R1200GS to GSA tank capacity swap

So second tank of fuel today and it’s taken 27ltrs after 265 miles. So it should be able to do over 300 quite easily.

However, the tank when full still only shows 155 miles to empty.

Anyone know if there is a way to tell computer that the tank has increased to 33ltrs as opposed to the original.

If you have Motorscan check the coding value on the kombi (instrument panel) for Equipment->Model variant coding ABS, as far as I can tell it should be either "k25" or "k25mue", if that is the case then try changing it to either "k25_adv" or "k25adv_mue". This could work but i've not had the opportunity to test myself as the bike is currently in bits. On my 2011 GSA its set to "k25adv_mue"
That's the only setting I could find that may make a difference.

No, afraid I don’t have the Motorscan tool only a GS911. I will drop them a message and see if it can be changed with it.

Sorry if I’ve missed earlier thread info, but is the GSA tank fitted with a fuel strip? If it is, you can recalibrate it using the gs911.

Evening, no it’s the float on the later bikes and mines a float on old and new tank.

I did exactly the same conversion - 2012 GS to 2011 GSA tank. Was half expecting some problems but the bars on level display were about as accurate as you could expect. However, my bike doesn't have the onboard computer so I don't have a tank range readout. Don't miss it either, just use trip meter old school style .

Indeed, the bars do work fine but I’m like you I reset trip and start looking for petrol station around 250 miles..

If you work on 45 mpg, it's 10 miles per litre. That's what I use as a rule of thumb. Spec is 33 litres but I regularly put that much in and a few times managed 35 litres. I think a tolerance of 10 % is given by BMW which fits with this.
You should be able to get at least 300 miles out of a full tank before worrying too much.

Well got 309 miles hunting for a petrol station in Stornoway on the sabbath and it took 35ltrs! Someone’s petrol pump needs calibrated, I don’t mind I would have paid anything…

I have established myself that the actual capacity is 35 litres and others have also. I believe that there is a 10% tolerance as it is a plastic tank which can expand in way that a metal tank wouldn't do. That would seem to explain it. Best to always play safe of course but good to know you have a safety margin. I did once get 36 litres in but reckon that was probably the limit!
