An update of the original problem: I followed the good advice by "Arkwright" and "Trainman" and ran the bike dry again, until the engine got out of fuel. (again, the fuel gauge claimed nothig left and the computer "range zero"). Then I laid the bike down, the left side against the ground for a few minutes. Then up again and the bike started without problems! :clap Now the computer and the fuel gauge had noticed new fuel "range 80 kms". So I happily drove for a while but after about 20 kms the engene stopped again. I did the same procedure and again I could drive 20 kms until the engine stopped. I guess I could have done this for about 80 - 100 kms but I had some spare gasolin with me and I filled the tank with it

So, it seems that the right side of the tank does not let the gasoline run to the engine! Of course I will contact the local dealer on monday but please give me some suggestions what is wrong with the bike?

It souns like is something wrong , ask them to inspect it :nenau
I bin from London to Rotterdam , 70mph @ 4500rpm in a full tank and still had petrol :thumb

Fook me! you certainly get tooled up for a day out at Tesco!

Thanks IanC! Have I understood correctly:there are TWO fuel pumps in my bike, one pushing the gasoline from the left side of the tank to the engine and another pushing gasoline from the right side of the tank to the left side tank? (Sorry for my bad english :() Is there now a fault in the latter pump?

One pump is electrical and provides fuel under pressure to the fuel system. Excess pressure of unused fuel from the fuel injectors returns back to the fuel tank and drives a venturi "jet pump" (not a true fuel pump) which redistributes fuel back to the left hand side of the tank (unless the returning fuel pressure is not enough to operate the venturi).

Couldn't have put it better myself :D

The Sucking Jet Pump (venturi) is so simple I doubt it would ever go wrong - it's only a plastic moulding with no moving parts.

The reason you get only 20km or so after laying the bike on its left side to move fuel over is that the main pump is in fact constantly transferring it to the right side - so you can repeat the process a few times before you've used your 'lost' 5-6 litres.

The basic problem you have is a lack of flow (or less likely, pressure) of surplus fuel returning to the tank, i.e. the fuel the injectors don't need. As stated in the write-up I did, this can be due to a number of reasons.

Anything else you need to know, just ask :)
