Hi Folks,
I've been informed by my dealership that I need a new front wheel. They have pointed out a couple of very small bulges around the where the spokes go through the rim (3 spokes). A pot hole apparently? It runs true in all directions, no spokes are loose but I had to sign a waiver to leave the dealership with it! Has anyone had a wheel rim re built as a complete new one is £1200 quid!!!

What age/mileage is the bike and is it still covered by warranty?
I had a front wheel replaced under warranty because the dealer found during a service that the amount of weights used to balance the wheel were over the specified limit. I could seen nothing visually amiss with the wheel. The dealer contacted BMW and got the ok from them to proceed. The dealer admitted that they then booked workshop time to BMW so they had an interest in pursuing the claim. Maybe see if this approach is worth a look (if you have impact damage to the rim to support the pothole theory then this is unlikely to succeed).

Struggled with my OCD when I saw they'd used grey weights to balance my new gs with black wheels. Asked if they didn't have black ones and all I got was a 'you a bit odd?' look.

Hi Alan,
It's a 21 plate with 7k miles on it. I'll try and post some pictures but it's hard to see. Service guy wasn't interested and carried on typing without looking me in the eye! He even suggested finding a big pot hole and making a claim?? The tyres been on since the last service and that's wearing nicely. They didn't notice anything on the last service and the wheel is true in all directions because today I've strapped a DTI to various places and checked it. I've penned a complaint to BMW customer service so I'll see how that goes.
If I'd hit a pot hole hard enough to damage a wheel I'd remember! I don't ride or brake hard and I cosset my bikes, they get cleaned and polished regularly. I have noticed these very slight bulges from new as they show up when the wheel gets dirty, I should have maybe complained before.

unlikely to be pothole damage as any distortion due to impact would have rendered some of the spokes loose, would it not??

If you looked very closely you could see hairline cracks of say 5mm running from the spoke holes, wheel ran true but i did hit the pothole hard and was lucky i never came off!

I tried saying that there would be other damage but the service guy was shrugging his shoulders and walking away as I had refused to authorize it to be replaced. I'm at a loss and can see the only option is to replace it. My service history has it logged so I'll get hit now or when it comes to trading it in.

The second hand ones have damage to them and the set of new ones when split are still £1000 for the front one. I can't afford to throw that sort of money away on something that isn't my fault!

Frustrating, any option to get another dealer to look at it, gather any online info/info, go over service guys head and write to principal?
Finally request an engineer from BMW UK…
I don’t know how this works, never had the benefit of warranty cover….

What about getting a report from an independent wheel builder. Probably have to pay but may be worth it.

I went down this route as I felt very p@@d that a pothole caused £3K of damage (BMW stated that tyres could also be damaged) and the problem is no opne would take responsability, even the insurance loss adjuster would not argue with the rear one which showed no damage as they would be liable if it failed.

Insurance is the only option
