Do you know of other top loader options?
Hi, yes, I narrowed it down to 3 options,

SW Motech Trax Adventure
Touratech Zega Evo
Wunderlich Extreme

In the end I ordered the Touratech, it was tricky decision, I do like the quick release racks on the Motech but I preferred the mounting system and lid latches on the Touratech
I’ve had the previous model Touratech Zega Pro for 8 years and they are top quality

There are also other options from Bumot etc.

Maybe it's the central locking mechanisms?

I have to say the central locking on an "adventure" bike strikes me as being nearly as daft as that ludicrous swivelling headlight thingy. Enough bits fall off or stop working on modern GSs if you use them the way the marketing blurb says you should, without fitting them with more sensitive electronic gizmos.

That said, I had central locking on my RT, expected it to be a total white elephant, rather like keyless, but came to rather like it...
If the cental locking fails for any reason can you use the key ?

I've ordered the Varios but I'm having 2nd thoughts now,any reason why you changed your mind ?

The main reason is that I find top loaders much more practical and easy to live with, they’re easy to load and unload, especially with inner bags, I’ve had side loaders in the past

The varios will be less practical being side loaders and a funny shape, although I see Wunderlich have some inner bags for them that look useful

They’re also smaller in volume than the top loaders (I’ve gone for 38/38) yet they look to be wider when expanded

Finally, the varios sit quite close to the pillion foot rests, although the new ones are better than the previous model, Wifey said she’d “get used to them” but I’m happier if she doesn’t need to, the top loaders sit further back so there’s no problem

So in the end I decided I’ll put up with the scaffolding again

One of the benefits of aluminium side cases is that they protect the bike components from damage when the bike is dropped.......on a trip around South America with my wife as pillion we hit the ground a few times, not my riding ability but rough terrain the culprit, honest as I cannot tell a lie!

No damage to the bike. The panniers kept the bike off the ground, Aluminium, if damaged, can be hammered back into shape, but riders with various needed new lids and lots of sticky tape.

As said the top loading is easy, fast and convenient.

Leadfarmer….pictures once you get them loaded please.

OK, finally got round to fitting the panniers, all pretty easy

I stashed the central locking cables inside the black tail section

The bracket for the exhaust side foot peg hanger is a piece of cake compared to the 1200/1250 which was a bit of a nightmare (y)

Here’s some blurry pics in various configurations ……

Looks great , what size are the panniers. Suits the bike better than the Vario ones .

Thanks stick !

They’re the 38 liter boxes, basically the same setup I had on my 1200 but the new Evo boxes have a much better quick mounting system

They also have the advantage of no exhaust cutout so a genuine 38 liters both sides, I already have the matching inner bags

I love the way you have photoshopped the garage clutter out of the shot.......it's the giveaway! But thanks for posting. The panniers look bullet proof.

Must admit that set up looks nice, in fact the nicest ‘Adventure’ pannier set up I’ve seen on the 1300, and if I went away more often it would definitely be something worth considering, but for my needs the Varios, albeit smaller, will do the job just fine.
