R1300 Bmw luggage

My panniers wouldn't come off (I got to the point of using enough lifting force to almost get the back wheel off the ground....). The bike was delivered with them on, but I was never able to remove them. What they did do was not lock and then pop open on a country lane. So the cover fell open, smashed my wife's birthday present that fell out and then ripped the pannier cover off on the embankment (narrow lane). 250 miles in.....

BMW accepted they'd change the panniers (this was March, now July and bike and panniers all paid for in 2023 launch weekend), but just been told they are all being taken back (the panniers). And that sometime in 2025 I might get some new ones (as above). I have simply said, sort out a refund on the panniers - though thinking about it, I will also lose the central locking, which I paid for as part of the comfort pack. So I think I will be saying to them I want refunding for the top box (which has never actually been supplied to me (it's sat at dealer who said they really didn't want to fit it), the panniers AND the cost of the comfort pack (as it's the only way to buy central locking). That's nearly £2K I'd guess.

Let's see what BMW's view is
Ffs what a fiasco !!

Not being able to lift the side cases off means the latch is not lifting all the way . When I first got my cases something inside was preventing the latch from lifting all the way, it was catching on something inside. With some force It finally lifted fully disengaging the locking tabs. I took the case apart and lubricated the offending mechanism and the latches work well now. It was a lot easier fixing it myself, I just don't trust the dealer to do this kind of thing. As for the closing latches, like any case of this type they can't just be shut like a car door. They have to be pushed closed until you hear both latches catch, two clicks. You can have a decent weather seal or an easy latch, but not both on these cases I believe.

Heard the other day that my 1300gs won’t have the vario panniers

BMW outsourced the design and it got F’d ip

They are offering the Shad zlternative

A real fuck-up

I wonder how many people cancelled the bike order because of this ???

If you're still searching for luggage for your R1300GS, we have just had 15 pallets of both hard and soft luggage systems leave Touratech. They will be here at the end of next week, and it's already in the webshop. Check out the members discount to get an extra deal :-)

If Touratech's not for you we can also supply - Shad, Kriega, SW-Motech and Turkana. if you want to take a look at anything pop on down to the shop - it's lovely weather for a ride out.

So as an update BMW have called and offered that I buy whatever luggage I want up to £900 and send them the receipt. And they will pay for it if I take the BMW luggage in 2025 when they get it sorted.

It’s costing someone a lot of money to sort this ….

What to buy though, as I said in post #170 they told me about the £900, even though I’ve already had the free tail and tank bag given earlier.
I’d rather have the £900 instead of having to buy something to get reimbursed on that will become redundant once I’ve eventually got the panniers.
I can see an abundance of soft bags/frames etc being on the used market next July.

That's very generous of BMW but once you realise how much better the alternatives are you won't want the varios.I have the givi option and feel BMW did me a favour as they were superb on our trip to Norway.👍

Does anyone know if the new GSA luggage is likely to also fit the standard GS? I’m guessing so but wonder if they have learnt from this mess and are getting someone else to make it? The guys at my local dealer seemed to think it would be available towards end of the year

For those who need aftermarket luggage, the upside of metal panniers is that they prevent damage to the bike if/when dropped. Trust me, I have the experience!

For those of you thinking of taking up the offer from BMW regarding luggage, we hear on the grapevine that they may be stopping the deal on 8th August. But check with your dealer for confirmation of that because that may be just one dealer trying it on.

I just got the official BMW recall letter in the post today, the dealer can put a sticker on the pannier and supply straps to ensure they don’t pop open, or I can take them back for a full refund. I have used them for 3 Europe trips so far with no problems, so about 5000 miles. If I take them back for a refund might go Givi option as I have a set of 36lt panniers on a 450 Himalayan. If I fit givi pannier frames, do I have to remove the vario mounts ? Anyone know ?

No you don't have to remove the vario mounts,Givi supply longer bolts to go through the frame and into the vario mounts.
I've taken my frames off now as it'll be next year before I need them again, easy to do too

I got the letter too and I haven't even got them,I did spec some on my original order?Got the vario top box wife preferred it from a comfort perspective than the Givi👍

Good to know, I have found the vario panniers good, but very heavy, each side case is close to 8kg empty! And now I have a full set of givi Alaska monokey, I could use on both bikes and bank a bit of cash and save some weight. Will give it some thought

The vario side cases will stay closed if you push them shut and hear both latches click. The recall is because people would just slam them without understanding how a waterproof sealed door closes. The cases are crazy heavy, the top case is 21 pounds and you absolute feel it, even empty. The vario mechanisms are needlessly complicated. I think BMW is even disappointed with them . If you are serious about touring you should go with proper top loading ADV style luggage

Yes, the top box is stupidly heavy.

I got the recall letter this week….. even though I never bought the vario cases.
Two reasons for not buying the vario cases for me were : 1 …the weight of them even when empty
2… I had kreiga soft luggage from a previous bike that I like
3…. I had heard the horror stories on here and other web sites
4….. and lastly… the cost, as I couldn’t see how they were worth what BMW were asking for them.

Bloody glad I didn’t buy them now ( smug mode)

Hope BMW sort all the problems out for those poor sods who did buy them, but it seems that they are trying their best to do the right thing by the customer.
