I had originally fitted an old pair of cheap and very nasty handguards to see how they worked. They fitted fine but didn't have great coverage and my hands were still getting very cold. So, thought I'd test the Barkbuster Storm handguards, the ones with the bar end fixing.
These come with the option of an M8 or M6 bolt. As the OEM bolt is M10 a thread reducer was needed (M10 x 1.5 external to M8 x 1.25 internal - from Ebay).
The Storm handguards retain the BMW bar end weights which have a lovely M10 sized hole through them so I used an M10 rod, internally threaded to M8 (see pic, sourced from Ali express a couple of years for another project). The ones I have are 28mm long so chopped in half worked perfectly

The countersunk M8 bolt supplied was a bit short so I swapped for a longer hex head (will change these at some point, purely for aesthetics)
My initial try out suggested not much of a win in terms of upper hand coverage as they clashed with the mirrors on full lock. A bit of playing around made me realise that the steering lock still engages without pushing the bars right to the stop and that gave me a lot more room to manoeuvre.
So, threadlock applied all round and everything left to set. Now just need to test on the road
