R80 G/S Paris Dakar

As with all things just wonder if the current board lasted since 1985 how bad can it be :D

Bingo. I must have covered at least 150K miles over the years on airheads with standard parts and only ever had one rotor fail.
My 1980 airhead i've owned from new still has all the same electrical parts fitted and has never suffered from inadequate electrics or flat batteries.

Never had any generating or rectifiying problems on 3 bikes over 300,000 km, except when I followed the instructions when fitting a Omega Ignition to the end of the alternator , and my friendly local guy fixed that for $20-.

Just keep all connections clean, change the battery at the first sign of decline and dont prick around with a dead flat battery - get a decent charge in it before you even think of assisting it with a jump start.

I think I've got a doide board in the garage somewhere, recently taken off my Dakar project bike.PM me if your interested and I'll look it out.

Diode Board fitted non - starter

Got a new diode board from motorworks yesterday and fitted it this morning.

Old diode board with some broken connectors on the left hand side and burnt through in the middle

The new one below it for comparison - it is the heavier duty type which was £3 more

Now correct me if I am wrong but I bought these dampers to fit it on but not sure if it is actually needed on this model as there was nothing on it before :nenau

With the old diode board if I connected the battery the battery light would come on with or without the ignition in ON position :eek

It did fire up the other night no problem with the broken diode board as well.

Now when connect the battery after putting everything back together there is no click on the starter motor at all and the battery light does not come on.

Fuses are fine
Battery is charged
I have triple checked the wires are connected to the related connections as they are marked on the board and on the bike.

What am I missing here

I have checked and there is power on the main positive to the diode board and it seems to be earthed properly without the two additional brown wires touching the motor anywhere.

My initial thoughts would be why is the battery light not coming on and why is there nothing on the starter button. The headlight and taillight does work when I switch it on.

Got a new starter relay from Motorworks the yellow one, the old grey one next to it - £17

BIG breath...keys in ignition....switch on......RESULT :clap:clap

The motor turns over on starter button and no wizard smoke coming from anywhere :D I am so relieved as I was getting nowhere on the weekend and very frustating if you test and check things over and over and can't seem to point out the problem :nenau

Got my short enduro fender from boxer supplies as well.....now the work can commence

Ah I have been looking for a suitable rear mudguard. have you got any pics comparing the old sytock mudguard with the new one?

Whatever became of the bike in the end?

Still got it, been busy on other "projects" it runs and starts no probs. Sadly I have not put a single mile on it short of riding around the garden. Now that things settled with our trip through Europe last week can start focusing on this beast :thumb2

Good find.

What is it about airheads being taken to France, I had to collect mine from France earlier this year, flew to Limoges and rode it back, great fun.

Maverick... any updates?

Finally got round with some gentle persuasion from Chad to get it MOT'd & taxed in June. Put just over 5000km on it since as my daily commute. It starts on the button, 51mpg and makes a lot of nice noise :D

Need to get the WP forks fitted with some other bits I bought but at the moment it's just earning its keep!

Nice! What are you doing for yokes for the WPs? I'm planning on the same and waiting for a custom set from the US to be made... but in the mean time thinking to use stock ktm yokes. When you put on the WP's... are you going to get an axle made to allow you to use the bmw wheel or are you going for an excel etc.?

Got a set of WP's complete with yokes, machined stem & wheel - standard KTM wheel and brake setup. It literally just needs fitting. Spoke to soon about reliability, front wheel bearings packed up on my way home yesterday :D
