R80 g/s possibly the best bike BMW ever made

Above is my ST. Came to me as a wreck, sat in a garden unused for 4-5 years… was covered in algae, some rust, various muck….
It’s not a g/s GS hybrid… front end from a paralever r100gs , r100r tank, r1150gs front brake ( thanks mikey)
A great little bike that I enjoy riding, even if it’s a bitsa bastard.

All fair comment.
But we will see how many LC bikes are still on the road in 45 years😆
A hell of a lot less than there are airheads of all types. That bloody canbus wiring system will kill it for many. My tail light has an open contact and drains power so the bike has to stay on a trickle charger. The gs-911 confirms an open circuit. However the light is not on. Go figure.

I'm not sure there will be your equivalent for the water cooled bikes and their VVC variant There will always be die hard enthusiasts but I also think the parts will become stupidly expensive. You can see it happen that they become so cheap and undesirable many go for scrap until rarity drives up the price if actually ever does.

I'm just not sure the average hobby mechanics will care enough about understanding Canbus and setting motorised throttle bodies and variable valve timing to consider it fun.

I do think the complexity will kill enthusiasm for bikes of the last 10 years.

I bought an ST in 1985, the first owner was having a problem fitting in his garage next to his newly acquired Ferrari! We used it for a couple of long Euro tours but it really was too small, I think we covered about 20K miles on it but the lack of comfort is probably our main memory. It was replaced by the amazing MG Spada Royale which was at the opposite end of the comfort spectrum and is still remembered as the most comfortable bike we’ve ever had. After a K100RS I bought a R100GS in 1990 for our African trip which we still have and use regularly. I bought a 1981 R80G/S back in 2008 which I used for a while and then decided to rebuild and modify - sadly still ongoing. Looking forward to getting it properly back on the road in the near future.

Here’s my “ work in progress “ I bought it a while ago with a proper death rattle from the motor.
Turns out the timing chain tensioner slipper support pin had come loose and was just about to fall out completely.
Let’s see if there are any proper anoraks here that can spot the non original mistake/ enhancement.
I’ll give you a clue,”it’s staring right at you”

The bevel drive ? Looks like that’s a through axle variant when it should be 3 stud monolever style ?

Is it something to do with what ever those things are on the engine bolts?

Second vote for 1000cc pistons/ barrels…..
