Hi John,

Yep spotted the one above and the other one from the same guy. Both listed as 1981 Paris Dakar's, but ahead of their time unfortunately as Dakars were late 1984 onwards. So both just G/Ss with Paris Dakar tanks.

Happy Hunting.

Colin

I understood that the PD parts were a dealer fitted option. Although the option may not have been available until 1984 does the fact that it was retrofitted to older bikes make the bike any less original?

I don't know if the PD version is shown in the registration document for new bikes that left the dealer with the kit fitted.

If you do a frame number search if its a genuine pd that left that left the factory already built it will have the paint code 999 ( special Paint) I have one of the UK 999 which I didn't know until I started to dig around. I have been told there was only 10 imported to UK the rest where built out of kits. Unless anybody else knows better

I think you are correct. Mine was built in 1986 and left the showroom as a PD (I know the original owner, I am the second owner) however, the VIN shows the bike leaving the factory as a stock dark blue GS. The factory build PDs had a remote adjuster option for the rear shock where as the dealer kit bikes did not. Interestingly what must have been the original tank and side panels were not sold with the bike. Kits were made available in late 1985 for 86 models years. They have no records on the number of bikes that left showrooms like this...This all came from my neighbour who works for BMW UK. So I have a "semi fake" PD....does it matter?

That bike is a bit of a parts bin special - the seat looks wrong, you can still see the bracket on the muffler for the long narrow heat shield, not the G/S type fitted, and tales of PD involvement should be taken with a truck load of salt.
All you are getting is a rough G/S which hasn't run for five years with a PD tank, and you could probably buy a cleaner running bike and put a PD tank on it for at least couple of grand less, and you wont have to rectify five years neglect.

Here is another take on the Paris Dakar :green gri

But I'm not selling mine.......it's nearly ready for a big trip :thumb

Yep that is very true, a friend of mine is selling a stock g/s in nice "well looked after" condition for £5500 and I think another £750 will buy you a mint PD tank. A well sorted "PD" for £6250 and only those in the know would Know, know what I mean :blast

Hi Steve, it a Dunkel blue g/s I can get some photos emailed across to you a little later if you like?

Cheers John, is it a genuine bike with some provenance? Reason I ask is , as soon as a bike appears on here the collective spot about 20 things wrong with it!
Ill pm you my email addy

No it's a proper thing, he is in no rush to sell it. I've asked him to email me the photos so you can have a look.

Gary Burton at BAMW had 2 for sale when I spoke to him recently, expensive though.

Our prices here in Oz havent risen as much as yours, nice stock G/S's are changing hands for around $8000- and rough non stock bikes not much more than half that - I paid $4200- for my well worn G/S PD and the guy delivered it from 400 km away.
Dont confuse reality with Ebay reserves - the bike that I know changed hands for $8000-ish was bid to $15,200 on Ebay but didnt meet reserve -----------------.

John apologies for jumping in on your PD thread.

Cheers Mike, Tried to contact Gary just to get a feel of the top end of the market, but no joy on mobile /email / landline!other than knocking on his door Im a bit stumped. I wondered if he was away on a trip/ hols
