I have bent the monoshock on my ST (ok stop sniggering at the back) and need to find a new one, but what are my options, it needs to be stronger than a standard item, as I actually use my bike fully freighted with camping gear, and hit the pot hole ladden tracks and back roads.

will fitting a G/S shock be an option, or will the extra 15mm length make a lot of difference with the handling?
 
I doubt the g/s shock will be any stronger than your ST one Kev. Looks like your into the after market ones. I'd be wary of Wilbers though I had one built for my g/s and it was truly appalling with it's fast response, it felt like somebody was kicking me up the arse every time I hit a bump in the road. Maxton will build you a brilliant shock but it will cost around £500, Ohlins never seem very durable to me and are ridiculously expensive.

Hagon are Hagon - After having a shock snap at the top mount I'd be very wary of riding one over anything bumpier than a cattle grid and I'd slow down for that.

It may be worth contacting K-Tech to see if they can help. Used to be a brilliant company to deal with.
 
If its any help Kev the difference in length of ST as g/s is that the g/s is 20mm longer centre to centre of fixing holes :thumb2
 
Kev, did the old shock bend as a result of bottoming out? If so then maybe a G/S shock will less likey to do so. I know that eye to eye the G/S one is longer but how does the eye to eye length compare when fully compressed?
Maybe a ST length shock with more preload would be better?

and I have to say it is a thing of great beauty, satin finished alloy, gloss black spring, and a 16mm shaft I shall try to get it fitted this weekend... :thumb2

Nice shiny shock, (thinks)... might just haved to tidy up the swingarm, which is looking a bit manky... That of course will show up the frame and to do this properly, might as well take the engine and gearbox out.... stainless pushrod tubes, oh well might as well check the valves and guides, Oh and clutch and gearbox might as well be checked.....:rob

Let us know what you think of the finish and the ride. I'm thinking about a new shock for a 1990 paralever GS. Had the Hagon rebulit once and it's on its way out again.
I've thought about splashing out for a Wilbers or Ohlins, but I don't think I can bring myself to spend 1/4-1/3 of the value of the bike on a new shock.
 
It's fantastic

So this weekend has given the new monoshock a serious workout, the R80 has been fully freighted for a weekend camping down on the south island:thumb and I am well pleased, the ride has been great, although I did have it a little soft for the ride down, but a little adjustment over the weekend and the ride home was much better.
Fantastic bit of kit, and highly recomended.:bounce1
