I have the chance of a 1988 R80GS.
Its in tidy condition and has a White Power shock. 46000m.
I am familiar with the /7 series airheads.
Is there anything particular to look for with this year GS.
Any ideas on value?

Cheers.

only the usual to look out for, the worse thing is the rear shock and thats been sorted so condition will be the biggest clue on value.
£3000/3500 ish could be 500 either way if its crap or mint
standard is good regarding value :thumby:
how much is he asking ? any pics top bikes :bow

Sounds about due for a top end rebuild :D

My '89 R100GS has the same mileage, and I've just replaced the valves, guides, etc. etc.

Brilliant bikes though, and the best GS ever, IMHO :thumb2

yep! bang on the mileage to start thinking about a top end rebuild although it's not such an issue on the puny R80 motor :D

Drive shaft needs checking and the gearbox should all work ok. Don't fret about the circlip issue, it's the yanks who get in a tizz about this, the rest of the world manages well enough without it.

The starter motor shouldn't make any ominous noises when it starts the bike. This year came with the valeo starter motor that was prone to it's magnets dropping into the rotor.

A Y piece should knock a few quid off the price. The 88 bikes had a chrome silencer that was prone to rotting, later bikes had stainless steel that can be retrofitted. Y pieces knock the crap out of the standard silencers so any rattles from the exhaust will probably cost around £350 unless you can find a good second hand one.

Crappy front fork action can be fixed with a better oil grade and preload spacers from a PD.

Make sure the rear brake works smoothly with no oscillations from the pedal.

Apart from that...

Thankyou for the replies gentlemen. :thumb
No pics as yet and the owner wants me to make him an offer.
Will update with pictures if I get a deal.
Cheers
