Hi All, I've recently purchased my bike from a local Royal Enfield dealer who'd had as a part-ex. The Rev counter has suddenly ceased working.
I've looked at the Haynes Manual that it came with, and I'm none the wiser.
Oh, and mine seems to only have 5 Gears, despite being a 2004 plate, and the manual showing it having 6???????
Any thoughts greatfully received.

It’s sounds like an early 850R which is the same as the 1100R.
Which are completely different to the later 850R/1150R
Does the clutch have a cable or is it hydraulic operated ?

I have a small manual which came with all the paperwork. Despite the bike being 21 years old, it looks almost brand new. Page 37 has a section about checking the fluid level, so does that make it hydraulic rather than cable? This is the same manual that states that the bike has 6 gears, when mine appears to have only 5. All very confusing.

Look at your bike, not a handbook (it could just be a later handbook. ..
it’s simple, does it have a cable operated clutch or an hydraulic clutch .. cable clutch has 5 gears, hydraulic has 6 gears ..
a 2004 bike should have 6 gears and an hydraulic clutch .. unless it’s an early R850 with 5 gears and a cable clutch which sat unregistered for 4/5 years, or ……. It’s a ringer

Purchased it two months ago. It's a 2004 plate, so I assume 21 years old..
Not sure whether Tacho electric or cable..

It looks like a 2004 bike with an hydraulic clutch .. but it has the early sticky out oil coolers. A 2004 bike should have them up next to the tank covered with bodywork panels ..
Here’s a post 2001 bike ..

The Frame number is on the headstock at the right Give us the last 7 digits Should start with a Z

then we can tell you what it is

Only 3 wires on the revcounter so should be easy to trace !

the shop that sold it HAS to give 3 months warranty by law . do not touch it . take it back and get them to fix it .

UNLESS YOU BROUGHT IT WITH AN AGREEMENT OR AS " TRADE SALE "

Plus the tank/bodywork etc for the 1100 based variant. (looking at Bruin's photo)

Seems odd: could be that someone fitted a later clutch to an 1100-based bike?
Or an 1150-based bike was (for some reason) fitted with the earlier bodywork/tank from the 1100 based 850??

Would BMW have produced an 1100-based 850 with a hydraulic clutch? (maybe as an "in-between" variant of the 850?)

You could always try plugging the serial number into realoem.com .

Ah an R850R classic If I recall!

Electronic tacho

Some debate if there are 5 or 6 gears on the net !! Link1 & Link2 but definitely a later model bike with the Twin spar alloys

The earlier 850 and 1150s had 3 spoke rims
