r850r

Not an R850R, but got an R850GS. In fact, just got off it. Not underpowered at all. Obviously depends on what you compare it to. Might feel a little lacking compared to a Hyabusa, but compared to an R1100GS performance is pretty much the same. The reason is that although the 850 is a bit down on power compared to the 1100, it's also lower geared, so very similar urge. Assuming the same applies to the R it'll be plenty grunty enough.

Also, the 850 is a bit smoother than the 1100 and 1150. Lovely mill. Mines done nearly 80k and it's as sweet as a nut.

Hi Rock, I had an R850R as a service loaner, and I really liked it - didn't feel like it was missing out on torque or acceleration over my 1100GS. It also revs more freely than the 1100 and felt good and frisky to ride.

My Girl has one and we did a weekend in scotland in september

I had it for a few weekends as I didn't have a bike ready and I loved it

It spins the motor up faster than the 1100 0r 1150 and with the high ish bars and availability of good rubber it handles well very well in fact, Much less scarey than a ZX10R as my mate found out to his embarrassment! :aidan :aidan :aidan

Especially when you dump the ridiculously heavy exhaust and fit a link pipe and can It just liberates some extra ponies

Max is lucky to have one of the rarer multi coloured Grey and Silver ones which adds that bit of individuality :D

Depends which year R850R you're talking about.

Huge difference between the pre and post 2001 models. Same differences as the 1100 and 1150 models.

Pre 2001 has 5 gears and the "iffy" gearbox, cable clutch, same bars as an RT (i.e. two seperate bar ends fixed to the top yolk etc.

The post 2001 has 6 gears, better gearbox, hydraulic clutch, seperate cat and silencer, better forks and brakes, normal set of handle bars etc etc and could have twin spark engine.

:nenau Like I said, compared to an 1100, pretty much the same.

+1

Also got 850GS, different gearing means its just the top end that's a bit less. Which in real terms in this country is rarely an issue.
I had a loan 850R some years back when I had an 1150GS, and was amazed how good it was, and how comfy, best seat anywhere I reckon. When I was offered my 850GS I had no doubts about buying it having tried the R years earlier. And at about half the price of an 1100/1150.

I've a pre 01 r850r. I've recently started buzzing round on it again. The gearbox is not as good as my 1150gsa and needs to be preloaded to avoid embarrassment! It's not underpowered though. I dumped the cat and the bike revs higher and more freely. Has a nice thump thump thump sound now!

Hello

I just picked up a 99 r850r at the weekend and have put 500 miles on it already - apart from a dodgy fuel light I really like it - more than happy up to 20 mph over the legal limit and really easy and un threatening to ride (especially nice in this weather) - Mine however has Bridgestones on it which have just confirmed my opinions of Bridgestone tyres i.e. fit something else !
I was ideally looking for a GS but this came up at the right price so more saving now before more GS hunting !

I've had a '01 850r for three years now and love the thing, only thing I'd like is a sixth gear for long distance cruising at motorway speeds, but on A roads and the twisties it rocks. Continental Road Attacks suit this bike well, very confidence inspring wet or dry.

Matt

This is almost turning into an 850 gathering:bounce1

Any more? Any 850RT's out there, I believe there are some about. And I saw something somewhere the other day that suggests that they now make 900's to go with the 12's, but obviously don't import them here.
