I have ordered some new front wheel bearings for the ST, are there any issues I need to know about before I start this job? have any of you done it?

I vaguely remember reading something about having to shim them but I may be mistaken.

Kev...just knock them evenly out and obviously tap new ones in with the centre spacer fitted...wheel spindle spacers will automatically centre up everything nicely.:) The wheel bearings only needed shimming on the older models ( R90s etc ):thumb2

Kev iirc from the Airhead weekend' the tube between the bearings has a big washer/planetary ring that keeps it in line inside the wheel. It will quite possibly cause the removal of the bearings to be a right bar-stuard.

Getting the bearings out with a drift from the inside is very difficult. I'm sure though there is some sort of puller to do the job properly :nenau

It might well be worth the trip to your local BW dealer and get them to pull the bearings so you can refit the new ones. Could save you hours of frustration and posible damage.

When refitting, grind, file or remove the washer/planetary ring from the spacer tube, so that next time you can easily push the spacing tube to one side enabling you to get a good purchase on the bearing with the drift :thumb2

The g/s and ST wheels do need to be shimmed and torqued correctly. You will need a selection of spacers and a torque wrench that covers the 150 to 300 Ncm range (1.5Nm to 4Nm)

I've got spare spacers and the kit to do it if you fancy a trip up kev :thumb2

These are the pages from the original G/s workshop manual

If you replace the bearings then they need shimming - the bearings are taper roller bearings and need the pre load setting correctly. The pages above are from the technicians workshop manual for the g/s.

Ok then, I have had a thunk about this, and have decided at this time to remove the seals, drop out the bearing races, clean everything up, and repack with new grease, and then fit the new seals I have here. I will then do the bearings at a later date with Robs help if he doesn't mind... :bounce1 :bounce1:thumb

Now listen here you two...behave yourselves..especially Kev who is just a tad taller and heavier than me  ( but I bow to the massive Rob  ) I'm just a petite, quiet, likeable guy :angel

Anyways, you lot behave yourself..I'm off to sleep with a bloke at the Dragon Rally and will be away/drunk until Sunday so I hope anarchy doesn't rear its ugly head whilst I'm away :rob

Well the wheel bearings were nearly done yesterday, when I say nearly done, it was along the lines of "Houston, we have a problem!"
The wheel was dropped, the seal on one side was removed, and the bearing components were taken out for cleaning/inspection. Including the pressure shim part Kenny! :D then with all the parts deemed to be in very good condition, they were greased up and re-installed, it was at this time that it was noticed the wrong seals had been supplied, they were way too small, and made of metal, it seems a mistake had been made and I had been supplied with seals for the /5 models:blast oh well these things happen, so I am now waiting on the correct set to turn up, to finish the job.
