Just about to get all the powder coating back at the weekend and the first job I want to do is assemble the swinging arm back into the frame. However prior to blasting and powder coating I had my local BMW dealer remove the shaft from the swinging arm ( and it cost an arm and a leg) . I am rather concerned how to hold the rear coupling in order to tighten the nut to very tight (160 ft lbs ) so that the drive shaft taper is held firm and will not come undone. Are there any special tools I could buy or make or is there a specialist in the south who would do what appears to be a simple job for me for less than the £100 I spent getting it removed.
Any help appreciated
Byron

Thanks

I have an unused tool for compressing the driveshaft etc., I paid £70 delivered..you can have it for the same price if needs be.

Thanks for the offer but sadly the /6 drive shaft that I have does not have the shock absorber and the cir-clip but the male and female tapers and a nut done very tight

I bolted the gearbox-end flange/plate to holes in a big price of metal (my bike trailer), which worked OK to hold the shaft from rotating as I swung on the torque wrench.

Hi Mark
I understand what you did but were you not worried about transferring all that torque through the U J joints?

Here is the only photo that I have of my driveshaft. I thought that there would be a special tool that would fit inside the splined drive coupling to stop it turning and not transfer all that torque through the UJ joints it the square flange is held secure. rehabs I am being over cautious!!!
