I've seen an R90S for sale near me with Bings fitted instead of Dellortos.
Should this put me off or is it a decent mod?
I understand of course the effect on originality and value but how does it affect performance/rideability?

It's probably wise to check the heads are genuine R90S and that it isn't an R90/6 in drag. Why not check the frame and engine numbers at the same time, too.

As far as performance goes, if you go down the shops or go for a tour, you won't perhaps notice the difference. But if you like rare steaks and Italian tune-ups, and looks are important, the Dellortos are better. Dellortos take longer to warm up than Bings, which perform better on part choke. Dellorto chokes are either on or off. The throttle quadrants are different between the two types, too, so check you get WOT with what is there.

I've seen an R90S for sale with Bings (some time ago) in a dealer; he took ages to sell it. Like years. Could be whoever bought it is now moving it on. Just a guess.

Parts are obtainable for both types.

FYI I've a couple of bikes with Bings and 3 bikes with Dellortos. I think the Dellortos make the bike go better on the pick up (due to pumps) but perhaps do less well on fuel unless you have them in tip-top condition. But who cares, because they aren't used everyday are they? I wouldn't buy an R90S with Bings unless I was going to put Dellortos on it, but that is just me.

Thanks for the advice.
I did come across an old listing on the web for that same bike in Robinsons of Rochdale. It did state that the engine wasn't original. Could have been what you saw.

Check the frame number/engine number if its an R90 S

Bings were a good "Touring" Mod Dellortos are very On/ Off if aggressive on the throttle

Also what Model of Bing It will be stamped on the casting web, that will give you and idea of the age of carb

Bings work well if you’re riding big mountains - they seem to handle the changes in altitude better than Dellortos (well in my experience anyway).

Lots of aircraft out there running Bing carbs which kinda confirms that.

Appreciate your words of wisdom Dr Farkoff and Nin.
It seems like it might be worth a look but to approach with a deerstalker hat and magnifying glass.

Like what you did there Khulu, very subtle!
I've already seen your R90S for sale.
Thanks for the offer but you're a bit too far away for me, both in mileage and price.

Price is negotiable and if I could get mine home from Rome them from me to Wales should be a breeze.
I bought my 1260S Multistrada from Aylesbury and got a bike van to deliver it to me.
