My bike with standard suspension is due tomorrow, however, I've had a niggling voice saying that I should get the Sport suspension.

Coming from a GSA, the sport suspension on the Rallye makes the bike the same height. This can be achieved with the extra high seat, available on the standard suspension bike, however, if you spec the Sport suspension, you can only have the lower Rallye seat. Ultimately, the seat height will be the same on both versions.

The main reason for changing from a GSA to GS is because of ongoing back issues, so I need to get this right. I'm reading mixed reviews of the Sport suspension; BMW market it as harder, and higher than standard, some reviews say it's the same suspension components/ ride height/ comfort as the GSA. If it's the latter, this would be the setup I'd want.

So, my question to anyone that's either come from a GSA onto a Rallye with Sport suspension, or to anyone that has ridden a Rallye with Sport suspension, is how hard is it? I haven't found a dealer with both on demo, so can't ride them back to back, before the usual smart arses pipe up!

If I change my order, it needs to be first thing tomorrow, as the bike I've ordered is being delivered to the dealer tomorrow!

HELP!!!!!!:D

The standard bike comes with radiator and frame guards, wide enduro pegs, single seat, sports windscreen, cross spoked wheels, riding modes, ASC, hand guards and fairing fastners.

Ths Sport comes with additional Dynamic tracton control, LED headlights, daytime riding lights, hill start control, addional dynamic riding modes, chrome exhuast, heated grips, tyre presure control, LED indicators and ABS Pro.

My words,
If it only is being ridden on the road why would you want the Sport version

This is the hardest BMW Gs to spec up even the Dealers seem unsure and now reading your post I think I might have cocked up

I've read all the reviews under the sun. I'd want the Sport version for the reasons in my OP.;)

Ive sport to c ollect in morning with premium pack and lowered.
I have a copy of bmw spec sheet they use for our bike orders that breaks the spec down.
If hou want a copy pm your mobile number and ill send you it

One review reads

"Also available as an option on the Rallye is a new professional sports suspension. Increased spring rate creates a “harder” suspension while longer spring struts and therefore longer spring travel lead to additional traction and maneuverability for off-road use. BMW says this is especially noticeable over gravel passages. This harder suspension also means a reduction in comfort and an increased seat height (ground clearance in increased by about .8 inches/20mm)."

Yet, I've read other reviews/ reports that say the suspension is exactly the same as on the GSA. Which is extremely comfortable.

Think the sports suspension is only needed if extreme road riding.
Dealers here were over testing bikes off road and on road and none of the test bikes had the higher suspension.

There's certainly a lot of mixed reports. The folk over on the US forum seem to think that the standard suspension will be the less desirable model.

What do you mean by standard. The 12k bike or 14k with the ESA.

i had a TE before and do a bit of light off roading and it was more than capable. I didnt want to lose any of that spec so went for the sport with premium package as it will be on the tarmac 95% of the time i own it

If the Rallye comes with identical suspension to a GSA then it will give a harsher ride as GSA suspension is set up to support a much heavier bike.
I think a GSA weighs a good 20kg more than the Rallye.
Imagine a bike weighing 100kg with the GSA suspension, it wouldn't move.

One of the problems of rushing to get a bike before anybody knows what's what 'cos you must have it NOW.................. ;)

One thing about the suspension makes sense and no sense to me;

Longer travel more suitable for off road - check :)

Stiffer suspension more suitable for off road - eh :nenau

Surely you want longer travel and more compliant suspension for off road?

Your thoughts that it may be 'just' GSA suspension (with a slightly lower rate spring?) makes sense to me, I'm at a loss to why BWM would make the suspension stiffer.

Taller will be worse on road where lower CofG is best.

These are very good points.:thumb

The only reason why I'm rushing is because BMW UK have made a significant contribution to the deal, as long as the bike is registered by the end of this week. Otherwise I'd take my time.

I can't get my head around why BMW would make the suspension stiffer, as they know that the majority of owners won't go properly off road, and the typical GS buyer wants comfort on the road. Seems a bit odd.

I thought the entire point of the Rallye was that it was the first GS specifically intended for off-road? Although, as far as we can tell so far it seems to be mainly attracting road riders who like the idea of a blue frame...
