Just bought a 2000 1150 Gs with 16000 miles on it. It has a full service history, but i am a little concerned when starting up, as there is a knock/rattle for about a second, then everything sounds as it should.... Is this normal?

I believe so. That sound is the cam chain awaiting the tensioners to start work once they've sufficient oil presure.

Russ.
Thanks for that, Bryn

Here is a slight variation on the start up noise thing........ my 02 1150 is quiet immediately after starting, then starts rattling after about 10...15 seconds, only getting quieter after a minute or two. Normal?

Now I'm worried..

mine rattles like a bag of spanners ALL the time.

Thank goodness for ear plugs!

I've recently had noises from mine too at start up. Already had it booked in to CW's for a 54K (6K) service, so told them about the noises and concern that it might be related to the alternator belt - especially since it got worse having fitted extra lights. They managed to get around to that too and fitted a new belt - luckily for me. Having looked at the old one, i only had a few miles left before i'd have been chargeless. Old belt was completely knackered. Less than a quarter of the original width. Winter's approaching so make sure you can ride through it ok. Also got a new battery too, as mine's a bit ropey.

Yup, they all do it to a certain degree.

After having the p**s taken a couple of times at a local bike meet (what u doing riding a traffic light generator bla bla bla) I now, when I'm amongst the jap riding tossers, flick the kill switch once or twice just as it's about to fire up to build the oil pressure and then when it starts it's silent.

Me an Deefa both have 02 bikes that sound like coke cans full of pebbles on startup, ones done 6k other 12k. Because it does not sound right to me I always listen to others when they start, some do not rattle at all.
Must say long term it cannot be good !!

Listened carefully to everyone's bike at Princetown on the weekend, and they all sound awful at startup.
