Rattling front discs

They've started rattling - again. The bobbins will need rotating - again.

Anyone got experience with putting in alternative wavey washers with a bit more spring in them than the standard? I've heard that the washers for the 1200's might do the trick - anyone tried this?

I'm also considering a spring washer with a stiffer spring to it than the wavey washers.

Also, I am aware that the long term damage of leaving this is that it will wear the seats on the wheel down so that the discs no longer fit snuggly, but aside from hearing the discs rattle away with each bump in the road, does anyone know if this will have a detrimental effect on my braking?

Make sure you have all the bits in place....

The very thin washer between the disc and wheel was an update to stop the discs from wearing away the mounting point on the wheel.
If the wheel mounting point is already worn then no amount of springy washers will help.

I am led believe the above parts are no longer available..????

Kenny,
Thanks for the reply and the pics, they speak volumes.

I was not aware of that the additional thin washer. That's the bit I'm missing!

As you say, once the part on the wheel starts wearing down, no amount of spring in the washers is going to stop it.

Any dimensions on that washer?

Also, do you know if I'm doing and serious damage to my breaks or if there stopping ability is being compromised in any way by having rattling breaks?

Cheers,
Aidjay

Not all bikes have additional washers see:-

My GSA only has the wavy washer. Be sure before you start "modifying " your brakes. Mine has got the servo brakes, you don't state what brakes you have. As kenny shows additional parts be sure you get the correct bits for YOUR bike, dont just go mix and matching!

Even the parts list for the GS (you list as having a GSA) only shows the wavy washer. (though strangely in the wrong order.)

Far as I know the washers were introduced to stop the discs wearing away the disc wheel mounts and help with disc rattle.
My 2001 1150gs did not have them oem but they were fitted at a later date with no problems.
Only spaces the disc out from the wheel by an extra 1mm and stops any wear on the disc mounts.
Came fitted as standard on later models.

Steptoe will know :rob

Finally sorted out the rattling - but...

The rattling is cured. For now.

So I took the discs off the wheels to assess the damage. The rattling was becoming quite severe.

As mentioned before, the majority of the rattle was caused by lateral play, i.e. in the same line as the wheel axel. The vertical play was minimal.

First thing I noticed is that there were NO wavy washers between any of the bobbins :eek.

This would be annoying if I thought someone changed my discs and just forgot (or was too lazy) to put them in, however since it was me that took the discs off last and I know for sure I put the wavy washers back in, leads to me to the conclusion they wore away and disintegrated, or broke and fell out.

When I say there were NO wavy washers, I lie, there was actually one left, but I said “NO” for dramatic effect. However, this remaining washer was in good condition, which further adds to the mistery...

So my remedy was to replace the wavy washers (again), but this time doubling them up, so there are now two wavy washers per bobbin. I suppose I could have put in a flat washer (as pointed out by others in this thread), but I had some spare wavy ones, so this is what I went with.

There was hardly any ware on the bobbins by the way, which was a pleasant surprise considering I left them to rattle for quite some time.

So has anyone else had these washers disappear on them before?
