Since my accident back in November I've been slowly getting the parts together to rebuild my GS. I was on the phone to CW's this morning and enquired about fitting the second hand instrument cluster to my bike. I was told by Motorworks that it may require some dealer assistance and diagnostics to fit. However, CW's tell me that it won't work as the frame number is programmed into the speedo head and the CPU on my bike will not recognise it? Motorworks have offered me a full refund but why are they selling them if they won't work?

Is there anyone else out there who has come across this problem and how did they rectify it? It seems that I am being told that I have no choice but to buy a new unit which costs almost £600.

I am surprised about that. I thought all of the bike-specific info was stored in ZFE (central controller) and its only that unit which can't be changed easily.

Maybe ask your friendly dealer or specialist.

Thanks Grizzly. CW's are my local dealer. Motorworks don't seem to know (they are specialists). Can anyone recommend someone else. I'm sure some must have bought and fitted second hand clocks? Maybe changing from kph to mph?

try another dealer,it should be possible to reprogram the system, its all down to the experience of the tech using the equipment.i had the same problem when i rebuilt a customers cat c ,the ecu was fried and quite a few dealers were reluctant to recode the used parts fitted.balderstones sorted it !.i wont name and shame the nay sayers:D

Go on, you know you want to :type

Typical dealer bollocks,
I changed mine for a second hand unit and it went stright on showing the original bikes mileage,I then got bath rd ( Mike R I P) to correct the mileage to what I wanted.

I have same problem with my r1200 gs. Dealer says you can use only new cluster. With is the system to make it show the right mileage.:blast

So you haven't fitted the used instrument cluster yet to find out for yourself.....

Bluebirds post is on the money..

MOTs record mileage so if new had unit is different it's easy enough to mentally calc the correct mileage. In the old days we kept the original speedo but not much point now it's electronic

You are absolutlely right. :thumb2 The unit was accepted with no fuss. I haven't had the mileage changed as I have no intention of ever selling the bike.

Bought brand new Triple Black GSA, went for first service, problem sir we can't clear an alarm error, have your got your fob?
What alarm, didn't know I'd got one, uh oh, turns out i've got somebody elses clock on my bike and vice versa, that's how it came from the factory

What else it built wrongly on the bike ??

If BMW don't know themselves without checking, I'd be tempted to use the Lemon laws.

Sorted now, rang BMW customer services, didn't want to go tooing and froing from dealer to dealer, i wanted them to come up with fix and go to dealer and say "customer services said", anyway simple fix just needs reprogramming on next service
