rear brake pads

Am keen to try extended test ride on an LC. any suggestions on rental ~ have tried Motorrad Enzian Hotel in Austria website but its bit ambiguous (no reference to LCs) also not sure of arrangements to get there so any info appreciated! Bought my 1200GS in 04 and then discussion was about alternative screens, seats, FDs and rear pad wear (caliper running hand hot). Looking at LC forums now and much the same topics! Given the accelerated wear on LC rear brake pads is a known prob, if scoring appears on disc then is bmw recovery (presumably bike is under warranty) an option?

I was staying at the Enzian 4 weeks ago, they had at least 3 or probably 4 GS-LC rent bikes. The fee for a one-off day was 83 Euros, I covered 310k during my day in the Alps.
If you ride over 350k in the one day you pay for the extra miles. If you are resident at the Enzian which I presume you will be, the hotel will give you a set of superb road maps of hand picked routes for you to ride, including one that takes you to the famous Stelvio pass. All of the routes give the distance covered. The owner is a biker and he will take you out to breakfast up in the mountains, where tables are set out-doors for a yummy breakfast.

I can highly recommend this holiday to any biker, if you are riding to the Enzian, and want to go via Hull ferry to Rotterdam, it is a 325 miles to the Ibis hotel in Heidelberg and then a further 325 mile to the Enzian which is very easily doo-able. However if you have more time you can follow the Rhine for part of your trip through Germany and add on the famous B500 biker road and maker your trip a 2-night stop.
I rode there on a Triumph Explorer which has now been replaced with an LC and it was that day in the Alps on the LC which was the deciding 'clincher' for me.
That GS rent-bike bike flew up the twisting alpine passes like a rat up a drainpipe. I was my best days riding so far this year!

You might be better to give the hotel a phone call.

You are well under the service interval. Just ride away, and let BMW replace disk & pads when youj get back. And complain bitterly that the brake is not fit for purpose.
Myke

Totally agree with Myke Rocks. They should last at least the distance between service intervals. I had the same problem with an early 2006 Hexhead they only lasted about 3 to 3.5k. Initially the dealer told me it was the way I was riding the bike. He was a bit stumped when I asked him how he knew how I rode my bike, I think he realised what a dumb response that was. He then went on to tell me that if I only braked gently with the front brake, because of the linked brakes the rear did most of the braking hence the wear. I asked why BM had not thought of that particular style of riding and allowed for it when specifying the pad material. Once again no sensible answer. Eventually they replaced the rear disc under warranty. Can't believe they haven't learnt that lesson!

I've had a call from my dealer today, after complaining about the rear brake pads over a month ago :blast

Today BMW have given the go ahead to replace them under warranty :D

I agree with a previous post, The pads should last until the next service, or the service schedule is wrong, :blagblah

Does anyone know if the rear brake pads on the last model 1200gs will fit the 2013 lc model. Mine are down to the metal, struggling to find them on the net. Any assistance would be great as we are in bergen on our return from thr artic.

Motorworks list them for the LC. Different to the non-LC though.

I would imagine that the pad material has been upgraded by now to something a bit more hard wearing, however it does makes you wonder if the brake balance ratio (front/rear) would need to be reset as a different pad material will have a different braking performance? :augie

Very good:rolleyes:

What you actually mean is now the brake will be like using a block of hardwood to stop the bike ! I asked bmw uk why the pads wear out within 3k but I'm still waiting for the reply !

I wouldn't hold my breath Ding Dong :blast

My dealer has been advised that if the bike has done 4,000 miles or less they will replace pads under warranty (thats the same as NuttyGSer said a month ago)

Diy

83 euro was a pad only price, had to do it myself in the car park, luckily it is a very simple operation on the Lc. Home this morning after a very scenic spin across England and wales yesterday.

How can they charge that for 2 rear pads? That's mad!!

I got charged £15.32 for a headlight bulb but it is BMW branded ? fitted during service even though the headlight was fine when riding to the dealer to get the service so must have blown in the workshop :nenau

Yes my dealer said the same regarding 4k and under so does that mean if the new pads wear out in 3k again meaning my bike will have covered say 6k will they be replaced foc again !

I see Nippy Norman wants £29 for EBC rear pads, why are they so expensive, is it because they are Brembo callipers? They are also listed as double H that's a bit excessive for rear pads! Or is that the only way they will last? Perhaps then the pads will last and the discs will be worn out?

My dealer gave me a price of £47-00 for the pads:blast

Thankfully due to some of our forum members pointing out certain problems with the rear brakes, I'm now getting them fitted free under warranty,

Nice one guys :D

Looks like the 1200GS uses the same rear pads as the K1600. Motor Works list standard and sintered pads. Perhaps the standard are too soft for the GS as it is a lot heavier than the K1600:blast or not:rolleyes:

I will go down the EBC route as I have always found their pads to be very good:thumb2

poor service

Called in to dealer today, 10 days after dropping off worn out pads to see if they had an awnser from Bmw whether they would replace my pads or not. Awnser was no, pads are a service item and Bmw do not replace these under warranty. When I told him about Bmw UK replacing pads for customers due to premature wear he said don't believe everthing you read on forums. Dissapointed but not unexpected outcome. We always seem to get shitty after sales service in Ireland.

I checked mine today and they seem to be fine ive done 4500 miles and they only look half worn, I wonder if they used different types during manufacture.

Mine got changed under warranty on Wednesday at 2700 miles, they reckon these new ones won't wear as quick. :thumb
