REAR BRAKE PROBLEM

i noticed today when putting bike in the garage that the rear brake was sweeking, i put it on center stand and found that the wheel was quite hard to turn, and that the inside brake pad had some movement when moving the wheel clockwise and anti clockwise. i pushed the pads back a little and the wheel moved freely, i then applied the rear foot brake and released it and the wheel became hard to turn again.

is it a case off stripping it down and cleaning? if so can i clean it with white spirits and a nylon brush?

Yes, sounds to me like the caliper has got stiff / dirty.

Strip out the pads. Clean the pistons with brake cleaner and a tooth brush or soft wire brush, NOT white spirit as this will damage the seals. Place something between pistons and pump out slightly to reveal more of the piston bore, being careful not to pop out completely (thus the 'something' in-between. Clean again, lube with brake grease and push the pistons back, clean over the pads, copper slip the backs to pevent squeal and reassemble. Ensure the slider pin is clean and copper slipped. If its rusty then replace it.
refit caliper with pads and voila, lush brakes again.
