06 GS 24k... When it was in for service I was told the rear disc needs to be replaced... Has anyone ever had to replaced a rear disc??

It's not uncommon, have seach and you'll find plenty of info'.
Some dealers are pretty quick to suggest a new disk so it may be worth checking the thickness yourself. They do chew pads up in around 8-12,000 miles too.
Although much maligned by some, I replaced my original rear disk with an EBC and switched to Ferodo platinum pads. I'm still on the same pads about 15,000 miles later and the disk also looks fine. Half the price of OEM stuff.

My dealer has been saying that my rear disc is close for the last 16,000 miles
They have to inform you when it gets below a certain percentage of wear but I'm not sure of what it is.
Anyway, finally got round to doing it and new disk and pads from Steptoe and new disc bolts from your dealer. Simple enough job to do your self

... I 'did' a rear disc in 18,000, Steptoe is your man for a reasonably priced replacement and new pads. Your're kind of screwed because the linked brake bias is far to heavy on the rear for spirited road riding.
... Min thickness at the back 4.5mm (4mm on the front FWIW), it does feel very worn when it's down to that. Dealers love to tell you pads are worn, when they still have plenty of meat left on them, always check yourself.

The bike is under warranty so they can change it.
Also, my front pads "need to be replaced"; they are very worn on the inner side, nearest the wheel. Is it unusual to have such uneven wear?
Would I be better to get pads from Steptoe rather than from the dealer?

if you use non original pads then i think your warranty will be up in smoke
warranty concerning the brakes anyway,if the engine goes boom it should still be covered no matter what brakes you have.
Unless the aftermarket brakes are dragging so badly they cause the engine to expire through exhaustion!

I'd be amazed if they change them under warranty as the disc is probably just worn out. Discs and pads are a wear and tear item and they don't last forever. Unless the disc is warped, you will have no chance. It's worth asking I guess.
Rear disc and pads from steppers is £86, 5 new disc bolts at 73p each from the dealer and fit them yourself to save the labour cost
i was told at 24k that my rear disc needed to be replaced. i already knew it was getting near to the service limit but only near. i eventually changed it at 30k and as mentioned is a real easy job. i now use ferodo pads and the wear rate has reduced and is more uniform across the disc.
my front pads are wearing very evenly, maybe your calipers need cleaning

Thanks guys.. I just assumed the disc was under warranty, but thinking about it they didnt' say it was!!

I have non-linked, non-servo, non-abs brakes and still on the same rear brake rotor after 45,000 miles - been through 3 sets of pads.

Had my rear disc replaced under warrenty on a 08 1200.Had done approx 10000 miles.
1000miles later had front discs replaced under warrenty!!!!!!!!!!!!!All warped

I do use my back brake more than most, it appears... I just measured it(roughly) and there is 4mm left.....

... FWIW - The factory discs are stamped with their minimum thicknesses (4.5mm rear / 4.0mm front) so in theory there's no excuse for either a riders, or testers, oversight.
... Steptoes replacements have no such marking

Seems to me you'd get more kms/mls out of the pads with even wear.

I've posted more than once about this problem - There's nothing wrong with the calipers or sticking pistons, some bikes do it and some don't. The 1150 GS uses the same caliper and can also have one pad wearing more than the other, my own bike (1150) does it.
All i do is swop the pads around so they all come to the end of their life at the same time. If i get a customers bike in and notice the same wear pattern i tell them to do the same thing.
Forget all the doom and end of the world warnings about not doing it ( mainly by the same people that want to sell you new pads each time
), it's not a problem at all.
