Today I had the rear disc replaced after the standard "safety inspection" reported that the rear disc was 4.5mm thick (minimum 5.0mm). The full retail cost would have been £300 plus (a new disc requires new pads and it all had to be fitted at workshop rates).

I used to have rear brake pads fitted frequently (though these were funded by my dealer or BMW; thank-you!) then the new harder-material pads were introduced. Not being backward in coming forward and seeing a connection I immediately said "is that a warranty replacement?". After a sharp intake of breath the Motorcycle Sales Manager was engaged and helpfully said he would refer this to BMW.

I have 15,500 miles on the bike and don't consider myself hard on the brakes (...but don't we all?!) - not really good enough for me. Anyone else experienced this (yet)?

That"ll be new rear disc.new rear disc retaining bolts new pads and only £500 sir. Thankyou.
If not sorted under warranty stick new pads in and ride...

I was told by the service manager of the local BMW mob that of the bikes they've serviced, their "computer" shows that bikes which have been ridden mostly in dynamic mode have had their rear brakes applied (by the dynamic mode "brain", not the rider) a disproportionate number of times compared to those bikes ridden in "rain" or "road" mode. Apparently this is something to do with the dynamic mode settling the ride, or reacting to uneven surfaces or somesuch. He was suggesting that the rear brakes had been applied an almost extraordinary number of times, reducing the life of the rear pads greatly.

Are you a "dynamic" rider ; could this be the cause ?

When my 2014 LC went in to have the starter switch replaced the mechanic told me the rear pads were 65% worn and should be replaced. When I pointed out the bike only had barely covered 3000 miles he said its a known issue and that BMW now use a different type of material in the pads.

Spoke to service manager who promptly authorised replacement of pads under warranty.

Rear disc and pads.

In under 12k I got through three sets of pads, two BMW originals (Brembo) and the last set bought from Bike torque racing, also Brembo. When I took the bike in for it's 12k service I pointed this problem out to the dealer. When I collected my bike they told me that the rear disc was below the limit and that they had changed it. They stated that they had put a new set of rear pads in and they were a modified type. They said that they would try to get the disc done under warranty they didn't charge me when I paid the bill for the service, I told them that I did not expect to pay for either the disc and pads. They have not called me asking me to pay for the disc and pads so assume that they have either had the cost covered under warranty or they have absorbed the cost. Just for info the dealer was Canons at Braintree. Also I only tend to ride in road mode.

Just for information it's not exactly up to BMW to replace the pads/disc. That's between you and the dealer. If they say it's up to BMW it's no such thing. Jjh

That's an interesting idea! Yes, I admit to being almost exclusively "dynamic".

I'll follow that up with BMW Customer Service since I'm going to be speaking to them shortly (since they have said "no assistance with a wear & tear part"). My dealer has managed to shave the replacement price down to £262.90.

Yes JJH I understand privity of contract. The dealer has done their absolute best to get some support under warranty and at the end-of-the-line have referred me to BMW CS.

I wouldn't replace a non warped disc at huge cost because it was .5mm under the specified width. The back brake only does 20% of the braking and providing you keep an eye on it's condition when it's serviced I'm certain it would be fine. Whilst I accept BMW have to have minimum tollerences too give their workshops guidnce of when things should be replaced, in the real world there is much better things to spend money on.

My dealer replaced the disc and pads on my 2013 GS and 2014 GSA, FOC.
The GSA was scraping steel at 3 weeks old.
I am here in Spain at 7500km rear pads are getting low, I have a spare set with me.
A set of BMW pads every 4000km at €100 a time.

You don't need to talk to BMW. You talk to the dealer. They sort it out for you. They talk to BMW as their customers. You are a customer of the dealers not BMW. If BMW decline to sort out the dealer that's between them. Should not effect you. Jjh
