Rear hub oil leak

As i thought,

Do one job, and it will lead to another ...

Changed the oil on the rear hub earlier this week.

Today when leaving work, there was a single sopt of oil on the ground.

running my finger under the hub, the casing below the round non wheel side dust cover thing

is damp / slippery

Looking on the parts list it would appear its the final oil seal that is the culprit.

Question is, is it a home change item or best entrusted to a specialist?

(and typical i'm going to need to replace the oil again lol)

Wheel side or outer side ??

Wheel Side Did you remove the Speed sensor?

If so you probably nipped the O ring Usual cause!

Outer side the Oil seal can get grit in it Is changeable by home mech

Garnnn ya tight git its 200 cc of oil!

The speedo sensor o ring is noted for getting damaged when sensor is replaced.

It's not the "O"ring

the back of the hub (disc side) is dry,

The bottom of the hub under the decorative cover on the Rh side is slippery and has quite a

build up of oily filmy crud in the corners of the hub

the only way to confirm, would be to pop the decorative cover off...

Might be a job for in the morning

Sounds like the outside (cheap) seal.
When my main (expensive) seal went, the back of the hub and rim had plenty of oil on them.
Fingers crossed!

Just been out this morning,

A thin film of oil running from the decorative cover down to the lower point where a small drip is accumulating.

So another part to ad to the order tomorrow morning

Not bad, in the last week - 2 O rings, 2 washers, one headlamp adjuster, one reaction arm pinch bolt & washer, and now an oil seal

All you can do is

Do you happen to have a fork seal swipe? If you swipe it around "sometimes" its enough

Never heard of that , over the counter product or specialist item? Re bought and payed for, The dealer certainly knows i bought it, i certainly know i'm, paying for it

Sounds like your outer seal has gone mine went when i was away in France slow seep of oil came out whilst i returned home (which sounds exactly like your symptoms) very easy fix.

Over filling the FD oil can cause the seal to fail. I thought (could be wrong) that 200cc was too much and 185 cc was the amount oil required.

Motorworks will have a replacement seal as should a local BMW dealer

I used something similar with a leaky crank seal on a Peugeot 207 I had. Magic! It worked!

Tightgit tip- A piece of old 35mm negative film can be used in the same way as the sealmate.

Or a long thin oval cut from a lemonade or similar smooth plastic drinks bottle.

BMW started with 200ml but reduced it because they had the odd one leaking from the breather. But as long as it gets through the warranty period what do they care. Mine has had 200ml from the day I bought it with no oil leaks until the main wheel bearing failed. 50K miles was a typical life apparently.
