I ordered an LED rear light to fit my 1989 BMW R100GS-Paris Dakar from John Olive in Australia (Adelaide?) and as my daughter and her family were spending a month with relatives in Sydney over Christmas, I asked him to send the light to them to save on the hefty postage, which he did.

I've just been out to fit it and..........it doesn't fit. It's beautifully made with 34 LEDs but it doesn't fit my rear light.

Have a look at these images taken from ADV. The alloy brackets and spacers keep the LED panel away from the light itself but come out about 10mm/12.5mm too far so that the lens won't fit on. Although it's marked 'R100GS' perhaps the R100GS rear light is deeper than the Paris Dakar one? Unless he can provide a better solution - and I've emailed him - cutting the alloy dowels off will allow the lens to fit against the light shell.

Is there a difference between the R100GS and R100GS-PD rear light?

Hi Paul, I am happy to help, please take some photos. I have fitted these to both R100GSPD and R100GS's has never taken more than -5-10 minutes, sold over 50 so far and yours is the first report of a problem.

Thanks. I have taken some pics but my main pc is playing up and won't load up Windows XP. Either there were different rear lights fitted to PDs or I may have a pattern light. Outwardly it looks identical but it definitely doesn't fit. The two mounting screws for instance are 55mm long and now cannot reach the inner ends of the spacers. I will post pics when the pc has been fixed.

Solved! John thought that the plastic 'pegs' in the lamp itself may have swollen from overtightening of the screws, but I hadn't appreciated that the alloy 'dowels' were meant to slip over these pegs. Just squeezing the alloy in or out a touch and the circuit board nestled home nicely. I don't know quite why I couldn't have worked that out for myself.

As for the light, it's really well made with the circuit board covered front and back with a resin of some sort. 34 red LEDs and six white LEDs take care of the lighting and the lamp is really impressive, a thousand times better an OE.

John Olive sells the lamp on eBay under one of his pseudonyms - money well spent. The lamp costs $67.50AUS which from memory is about £35ish.

Incidentally the package from Australia contains three insulated female spade connectors to replace the amazingly naked OE ones.
