Rear pad life....

Yes.

I asked my dealer about it and they knew nothing about it. I'd say it's simply the linked brake front/rear bias (especially with lots of slow stop/start town riding etc.), crap on the roads and 'very' soft organic pads. The sintered ones seem to last OK. I've never tested it though as even if it works I wouldnt be hammering on the brakes every morning in order to lock up the wheels.

so riders with good anticipation, and don't apply the brakes like a moron get shafted?

fecking brilliant

Non Servo, Non-ABS - just plain normal brakes - still on original rear pads after 18,800 miles and I use the rear a lot for slow speed around town riding. There must be a problem with the linked/servo/abs brakes if they are only lasting around 5,000 miles.

I've done over 12K miles on my front and rear pads so far and anticipate they should last to approx 15K (ABS and servo). Most of my riding is 2 up with luggage, on the continent and I don't do that much town work on it.

No I don't ride like a moron :rob and try to use the brakes as little as possible, relying on anticipation and the excellent engine braking the boxer engine has.

Got 12000 miles on my Non ABS/non servo 1200GS-A and no real wear on the rear pads so far. I checked them last week.

I ride quite hard and use the rear for town riding and checking speed especially in twisties so they do get used a lot.

So this high tech safety feature of linked ABS brakes only works effectively once you've had an e-stop and locked up the rear brake. This is a crazy system, next time I'm going for non-ABS, the more I learn about the BMW system the less I like it!

I am now going to try locking up the rear every time I rideout of the garage and see if it makes any difference to the rear pad wear. Normally the ABS never activates and I hardly ever use the rear pedal so that means I must be getting max rear brake bias, it'll be interesting to see if I can tell any difference after the system adjusts itself once the rear ABS has activated.

I can't remember who mentioned this at Llangollen - but there was a rumour that there is a "recall" to adjust the front/rear linked braking bias.

Mmmmmmm................the least I've had from a set of pads was 4,000 and the most 12,000 (ABS and servo'd) - what's going on there :nenau

And yes, apart from the original set (6,000 miles) the other two were both the same type.

........these rear pad threads are becoming as frequent as the oil threads!!!

Simple then - If you have ABS and linked brakes your using the rear brake everytome you brake so it wears out quickly. If you have no ABS then you probably use the back brake a lot less and not very hard so it last ages.
Us non ABS types will probably wear out front pads quicker.

I remember reading the first test of a tele lever bm in bike magazine and they commented that the back brake could be used much harder without locking up, due to there being less brake dive / weight transference than on a tel forked bike.
