Howdy folks. My rear shock is dead and I'm looking into a few options. Opinions please.

Firstly, I can not afford ohlins or wilbers.

I'm thinking of getting motopoint to rebuild my shock with a progressive spring - full set of seals - new oil - new gas.

Thing is, their looking for 160 euro for the rebuild and about 120 for the spring. Seems like a lot. Bmw are closed today but anyone have an idea how much a new oem one is?

I don't even know if I can use my shock (I have to check to see if the rod is damaged or pitted)

What do you think of the price (providing it works well afterwards?)

Thanks

Thanks Jaythro,

I was talking to the lads there and they could rebuild it but aren't really interested because they can't do a proper job they can be sure of. Something to do with the vacume when setting it up...Hope I've got that right. They would do it if I really wanted them to but...

I might just go with motopoint and see what happens.

You could try MCT in the UK, or if considering new Nitron seem pretty competitive on price.

i had an RT one done about 4years ago and it's still good Clarence did a good job

Much better than a new one or a dodgy second hand one

Nudie I just copied that whole address thingy from somewhere I never thought to check the link

my vote is for wilbers.

original bmw new will be lot more expensive than an ohlins or wilbers so saty away from bmw dealer

Not going near dealer. Taking shock off tonight to check the rod is ok. Been on the phone with the lad in Motopoint and he's done a few of these before. I've knocked him down a bit on the price too.

Looking at one of these springs

Hyperpro rear shock spring (R1150GS Adventurer) | HYA00034

TBH, Down is a bit away and when I start adding up postage vs time delay vs convenience vs this being my only transport, Dublin is winning.

Anyway, it'll be an experiment! Handy for us Dubs if it works out. I might yet back on to PIRSUSPENSION yet.

Incidently, anyone in Dublin (ish) area have a loan of an old gsa shock for a few days while I get this sorted?

Cheers,

hyperpro also do a progressive spring that is meant to be very nice job

It's the progressive spring I'm getting.

Anyone got a loan of a shock?! Might stick up a specific thread looking for a loaner. Anyone?

Might go with a new one

i'll be worrying about it otherwise.

incidentally, anyone know how to take the caliper off the rear? Can't find any bolts to take it off? while the rear wheel's off, I'm putting the new disc from the 850 onto the 1150 at some point this weekend too. Might as well clean the back caliper up but all I see is some rubber bungs???

ps this bike arrived with all the rust. I recon the first owner did a lot of time on the seaside:augie

850 for a new bmw one from J. Duffys, fit it yourself, the Ohlins was next in expense at approx 1100 and the wilbers went as high as 2500 for a new one made to fit your size and needs.
Was told the Bmw one could not be rebuilt or maybe they had no one to do it

She's not going to like it when I tell her the bike is my holiday this year:blast:blast:blast

I have a spare rear (standard gs) that will get you by. In Galway, could be heading towards Cork next week if you want to meet up halfway?

I have gone for the highest spec rear Wilburs (Remote Pre-Load and 3-way damping adjustment) and the pair are costing about £1300 fitted and setup (MCT Suspension)

All Wilburs are built to order and to your spec, you have to provide details of how the bike is used (one-up / two-up / on road / off road / with luggage) and rider / pillions (If applicable) weight. Wilburs then "Do the maths" and provide the shocks with the spring / shim stack to suit - this is at no extra cost.

Much better kit for far less money than OE tat, and with a 5 year gaurantee.

If you went for lower spec units (but still much better than OE) I think you can get a pair for under a grand.

Thanks bsd. I'm going to replace this one so I'll pass on the offer. Your a gent for offering though.

Rasher, front and rear??? I thought the front didn't do much?
