Hi all, just got a 12 plate tripple black and have been told by the dealer the shock has been rebuilt. I cant notice any difference when switching between modes. Is there any thing I can do to check?

Ask the dealer, what leads them to believe that it has been rebuilt.

Try contacting previous owners for their comments.

If you're happy with how it handles, what difference does it make ?

The dealer advised me it had been done just before they bought it. I'd rather know if it is working correctly before it runs out of warranty. If it has the option its nice to have it working.

The electronics are separate from the shock itself, I had a shock rebuilt on a K1300GT a few years ago and when it was refitted the ESA all worked fine. As long as your are happy the ESA is making the changes when you select modes then stop worrying.

That's what I'm trying to find out lord snooty, as i said I cant notice any difference when changing the esa so not sure if it's working! Just trying to find out if any way of checking it.

There's a setting on it that increases the ride height (two small triangles and two big triangles). When you sit on the bike with the engine running, feet on the ground and switch between them you should feel the bike slowly rise and drop.

You should be able to hear the motors on the shocks operating with the ignition switched on, engine not running and switch between the comfort and sport settings but you have to listen very close to the shock to hear it (there's a delay between selecting the mode and the esa motor operating).

To be honest i never noticed a big difference between the comfort, normal and sport settings, i find even the comfort setting quite hard unless i've got luggage on the bike. :thumb2

Turns out I cant do anything except switch between comfort, sport and normal. Cant change loading or any other settings in the suspension

Hi
Check if ESA preload connector is plugged in correctly Black flat one with 4 cables ... This is on top of the shock!
If someone was taking it out there is a chance that they didn't push it correctly.
There is a couple of other things that can be done but I would start with the simple one first...

I think the engine has to be running to use the other functions. (Just in case you were trying them without starting the bike up)

I know the layout on your bike is different but there's a bit of info in this clip.

Don’t do this , put it on the stand to change heights only small motors so will prematurely fail trying to lift 300kg of dead weight. You can then view the top of the shock moving standing at the side.

FFS the op only wants to know if his ESA is working, and how many ESA units do you know of, have failed prematurely because someone tried this, and how do you know it was premature.....or did you just read it on this forum.

Been In to bmw today and because its had an aftermarket front shock fitted the esa wont work according to the dealer.
Sounds odd to me

Is it an esa or non esa shock on the front, they should have mentioned it during sale ?

I'd go so far as to say, it could well be not fit for purpose.

Some aftermarket shocks such as Wilbers, use the BMW ESA motors and it should work well

It's a nitron shock that's non compatible.
Got to pick it up in a bit and find out what they are going to do with it as not what I expected

Depending which Nitron, they start around £450 new.

Why would a dealer knowingly sell a bike with esa which is never going to work. It must have been a lot lot cheaper. Nor will the warranty cover of the suspension as it's no longer standard.

Personally, I'd junk the esa rear shock and get a Nitron; weight appropriate spring, High/low speed compression and rebound with a remote preload.

Unfortunately it wasnt much cheaper that's why I'm a bit annoyed about it. Would have been a bit different if they had told me first. As for the esa, I've not had it but if its fitted I think it should work

What type of esa shock do you have fitted at the back of the bike Showa Or WP (white spring)
This could be tricky but its possible to install ESA cancellation device and this would allow to use just rear shock adjustment or get standard shock and install that in the place of Nitron run calibration on Gs911 and you good to go ...
