I've just sent my R1100GS shocks to All Bike Engineering for rebuilding. One thing they said whilst discussing the work, was that I could expect the ride height of the bike to be higher when I got the shocks back. I am 5'7" with an inside leg of 29", and at the moment I can flat foot the bike with my W2 boots on. They aren't replacing the springs, so how much higher can I expect the bike to be?

should be returned to OE - so a seat height on the low position of 33" unladen.

It won't be "higher" as such.....

But your rebuilt shock will no longer sag/drop when you take it off the stand and sit on the bike.

I guess it is all relative, but being short I'm a bit concerned I might be looking for some taller boots or a lowered saddle when the shock comes back :D

I guess the up side is (other than a shock that works properly), getting the bike on and off the centre stand should be easier.

Would you mind sharing the prices quoted and the work that you are having done as mine will need doing.

Thanks

Tom

I'm hoping that it'll all come in at under £170 for both shocks, if the rods need replacing it'll be £60 per shock more. I won't know the actual price until they've inspected and assessed the shocks. That's the price of a rebuild, inc re gas etc.

Give All Bike Engineering a call, they are straight up sort of people and won't mess you around.

you could get a set of lower springs, the 30mm less worked a treat on my 1150.

Thanks, I'd not seen those before, I'll see how I get on with the shocks when they get back. If I struggle with the ride height, I'll look at getting some of those (in black not purple :D ).

Did it interfere with getting the bike on and off the centre stand at all?

No, just a little more pull. Sits a bit more upright on the side stand.
With 29" inside leg and Corbin seat, I can get both feet down.
I fitted front and rear and haven't found any handling problems.
On 1150, rear spring needs to be fitted upside down.

Had mine re done today.. the service is very good.. mine did not need new seals so they just charged me for a service having had the original refurb done there.. 60 quid.

The shocks arrived back from ABE yesterday morning, so got them fitted this afternoon. The final cost was £230 as the rear shock needed a new rod, still a good deal for rebuilding both shocks though. One minor niggle, was the way the valve had been fitted to regas / refill the front shock, it limited the adjustment to only the top two preload settings (not a problem if you are tall). The OEM setting is the second highest one. Luckily the spring isn't too hard to remove on the front shock, so I dismantled it and made a small adjustment to the spring seat with the angle grinder, allowing setting the shock at it's lowest setting. You can now set it at either the lowest or the highest setting, and I have a spare front shock if I ever want to change the spring seat over. With the front shock on the lowest setting and the rear slightly less than STD, I can get both feet comfortably flat on the floor (with my W2 boots on).

The handling of the bike has been transformed, it feels smooth, balanced and the front end has lost it's tendency to wander over irregularities on the road surface. I guess you don't realise how knackered stuff is until you change it.

Does this firm repair / service 1200 shocks?

BTW there is no way I can flat foot on my bike. I soon adapted & really don't thinks it's necessary. That said I have to be careful with ride height settings any higher than rider only & I really struggle. :o

With a full tank of fuel and a road surface that slopes away from me, or is covered in gravel, I'm always glad of being able to flat foot the bike

:D

Me too so I avoid stopping. I dont like compromising with scrunched up legs for the few % of the time when I need to put my feet dow. IMO, enough leg length is important (obviously) but both sides flat footed is overkill.
