Recall

I have not received any email yet.

Alert of recall first surfaced on Access Norton yesterday:

Starter motor seal issue apparently. Chance of oil leak.

Just spoken to the dealer and been told “do not ride the the bike” there I has been a case of a bolt coming out of the starter ring and falling into the engine causing it to seize. The solution was to fit a new engine.
Now waiting for a date to have the bike collected and returned to Norton .

Dealer just called back to say they now have a list of chassis numbers of bikes affected by the recall and mine is ok. 👍

My dealer had a customer about to go on a test ride yesterday and while he was geting his kit on they had to cancel it.
Apparently their Norton Rep received an email at around 10pm Wednesday evening advising bikes should not be ridden.
Was due to collect my bike today, but phoned dealer to cancel this morning after I saw the post on Access Norton after a mate phoned to say he had seen this and similar on facebook.

Still not heard anything. Online reports stating its chassis numbers up to 0742 mine is 0743, but still want official confirmation.

Very helpful lady at Norton HQ has just advised me that the recall is for bikes built between 7 June 2021 and 12 Feb 2025,
577 bikes in total. At this stage it is not known which bikes are actually affected so they are all being recalled to check each bike.
She advised that as of tomorrow all dealers will have a list of recalled VINs.
Will update here if or when Norton / my dealer provide further details.

Just collected mine today and it’s ok to ride no issues as the later ones are ok , but the dealership said Norton are planning to fix them all as quick as possible .
The back wheel can lock up but the two Instance’s it’s happed have been in a workshop.

Dealer hadn’t got back to me so I called Norton. They have advised my bike is affected. It is the ring gear on the starter issue. Don’t take any notice of VIN number ranges stated online. Norton won’t publically disclose the VIN range as its company confidential.

Oh I was told the affected Vin numbers today . I believe Norton are contacting customers direct not the dealers and Norton are collect the bikes .

Could you share the VIN number information please so folk don't have to wait to be contacted and can stop riding their bikes ASAP in the interests of safety, cheers.

When I asked for them direct he quoted GDPR - I pointed out it was nothing to do with GDPR 😂

My bike is to be recalled.

Judd would not confirm anything other than give me the number to call Norton directly.

I am awaiting the recall letter from Norton and the DVLA!

The message below is now displayed on the Norton website:

We are writing to inform you of an important safety recall affecting Norton Commando 961 SP/CR/Classic built between 7th June 2021 and 12th February 2025. This action is being taken as part of our commitment to your safety and to comply with UK safety regulations. Please be aware that this is a stop ride notification

What is the issue?

It has come to our attention that the starter ring gear may have been installed using a bonding agent thread locker that has failed to cure, leading to a potential failure of the starter ring gear assembly. This may lead to the vehicle coming to a sudden stop during operation.

What should you do?

We ask you to immediately stop using your motorcycle until it has been inspected and repaired if necessary. We will shortly commence communication with owners to schedule an appointment for a free collection and delivery, inspection and necessary repairs.

What will be done?

The recall service will include removal, inspection and refitting of the ring gear retaining screws. We anticipate that the repair process will take approximately two hours to complete. This recall service will be at no cost to you.
