Recalls/Problems with new R1250GS/A

That's pretty hideous!

I spend a fair bit of time in a 330 x drive. It is a very nice car to drive - really sticks down its power into forward drive (some of the other quick cars we have just can't seem to do that). Lovely gearbox, and I love its wolf in sheep clothing that lets you cruise in comfort one minute, and then rag it the next.

They make a good car .... (and its been reliable ..). :thumb2

Please tell that's not real??? fuck me have Audi got a man on the design team....

So, I've just had a call from Williams Manchester, the bike is ready to collect. Apparently they did manage to find an issue, the timing was slightly out, but also on the left cylinder they found that the valve clearances were "massively" out, their words not mine. So new shims ordered and fitted and apparently the bike now sounds right. I won't know until Saturday when I collect but hopefully this is the end of an almost 3 month pain in the ar$e.

Considering the new engine only has 473 miles on it, I'm not overly encouraged by the longevity of the bike but we shall see.

Check your frame for scratches.:rob

They're just copying Lexus and Audi.

2019 1250GS with 31,000 kms

- brakes continually going soft with air in system (a carry over from the same issue with a 2017 1200GS)
- a change of mode (ie RAIN to ROAD) not changing on the TFT screen
- instantaneous fuel readout on TFT not working (may be a Garmin issue)
- spark plugs running too hot ?? causing pre-ignition and plug failure as in melting the center electrode and the Iridium tip falling off (and telling Service Manager of my initial pre-ignition event resulted in no interest & no investigation that may have prevented longer term damage to engine)
- a tappet type clicking from LHS cylinder that may be an issue(s) as mentioned in this post
- at time of 30K service 19 shift-cam error codes (which still have to be investigated)
- repeated failure to connect to Sena communicator and occasionally my phone

Likely to be my last BMW motorbike.

This is a problem that seems to hamper the modern brake systems with lots of kinks and bends in the lines...

I know of several cases where this has been an issue, and when I bled the brakes on my 1250, it occurred for the first time on one of my own bikes.

If this happens after a proper bleeding, zip-tie the brake-lever to the maximum pressure (which in this case probably means that the lever touch the handlebar). Leave it pressurized over night, and in a day or so the problem is fixed.
I let the bike stay on the center stand and turned the handlebare to full left turn.

I can not explain why this seem to solve the problem, I do however suspect that the pressure in the system makes the hidden air -bubbles smaler, allowing them to flow to the top of the system.

Anyway, for whatever reason, this works (for me).

Also air can pass through the seals under pressure where as fluid can not (unless you have a 1250 obviously!)... that's why you can fit a double piston caliper with a bleed on one side only and still get all the air out :)

Don't worry it's under warranty :blagblah

I take it you have one and you know! My X3 already had steering rods and the full steering rack replaced within its first year.
As for my 1250GS is on its 6th visit to the dealer as we speak and it’s less than a year old. Front brakes replaced, battery twice, engine management warning three times. And don’t get me started with fob battery warnings.
The dealerships have been great dealing with the issues.
I love my car and I love my bike, when they run properly, but no way I would encourage anyone else to buy them. I certainly have doubts I will again.
You all have a nice day!

Just a quick update...I got my bike back today...the dealer has replaced both cam chain tensioners. The ticking noise has now gone away so it looks like a fairly simple fix ...fingers crossed 🤞

Is it R1250GS? Your dealer has replaced both cam chain tensioners. The ticking noise has now gone away.

Yes ...it’s a R1250GSA December 2019 purchase. Yes both tensioner replaced under warranty. The ticking noise was only on the left hand side (as you sit on the bike) and the replacement has cured the noise.

Thank you for the information. Did your dealer tell you why you need to replace both side? Thanks.

USA Recalls

https://www.advpulse.com/adv-news/bmw-issues-two-new-recalls-r1250gs/

"BMW of North America has issued two new recalls on certain R1250GS-range motorcycles and several other models for a brake fluid reservoir cover issue and swing arm/final drive pivot pin defect. Approximately 51 R1250GS and 60 R1250GS Adventure models, for the 2019 and 2020 model years, may be affected by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) recall related to the brake fluid reservoir cover issue. Another 252 non-GS models (RnineT, RnineT Scrambler, RnineT Pure, RnineT Racer, R1250R, R1250RT, R1250RS) were also affected by the same reservoir cap issue. In addition, two 2020 R1250GS models were affected by a pivot pin defect along with another two 2020 R1250RT models, for a total of 369 motorcycles affected by both recalls.

According to the first recall defect report (20V166), certain vehicles were produced with a brake fluid reservoir cover which may not fully conform to US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This non-compliance recall involves an optional color-specific brake fluid reservoir cap, which may not clearly state the required type of brake fluid or process for filling the reservoir.

The second more serious recall (20V165) states that a pivot pin, which connects the final drive to the swing arm, may be faulty. During motorcycle assembly at a rework station, the pin showed signs of cracking prior to reaching the specified torque settings after being torqued a second time. It was concluded that the pin may not have been produced to specifications during a particular production period."
